# api-documentation

A set of rules that tells the agent how to write docstrings, JSDoc, Godoc and endpoint descriptions. Useful when several agents each carry their own copy of the same guidance.

## What it does

The skill lays out five principles: explain the why, not just the what; keep docs next to the code; document the contract rather than the implementation; include examples; update docs alongside the code. Then come worked templates per language and format — Python docstrings, JSDoc, Godoc, OpenAPI, GraphQL SDL, and a class description with a usage example.

There is nothing but prose and samples inside. No scripts, no external calls, nothing to install beyond the skill file itself. The author claims it removes roughly 100–150 lines of duplicated documentation guidance per agent, so if your agents repeat the same doc requirements, that is worth a look.

The skill is marked `user-invocable: false` and `disable-model-invocation: true`, so there is no slash command to run it by hand. It gets picked up as reference material when the agent writes or edits documentation. The samples all revolve around a discount calculation function, so borrow the section structure rather than the code.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill api-documentation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/api-documentation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill api-documentation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill api-documentation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills api-documentation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill api-documentation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path universal/web/api-documentation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill api-documentation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/universal/web/api-documentation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a docstring covering arguments, return value and raised errors
- describe a REST endpoint in OpenAPI
- document a GraphQL type and its fields
- add a class docstring with a usage example and a thread-safety note
- lay out a README with installation and quick start sections

## Example prompts
- Document `calculate_discount` the way the api-documentation skill shows: arguments, return value, exceptions, examples.
- Describe the `GET /users/{userId}` endpoint in OpenAPI 3.0 with 200, 404 and 401 responses.
- Add a docstring to the `UserManager` class with a usage example and a thread-safety section.

# API Documentation

Best practices for documenting APIs and code interfaces. Eliminates ~100-150 lines of redundant documentation guidance per agent.

## Core Documentation Principles

1. **Document the why, not just the what** - Explain intent and rationale
2. **Keep docs close to code** - Inline documentation stays synchronized
3. **Document contracts, not implementation** - Focus on behavior
4. **Examples are essential** - Show real usage
5. **Update docs with code** - Outdated docs are worse than no docs

## Function/Method Documentation

### Python (Docstrings)

```python
def calculate_discount(price: float, discount_percent: float) -> float:
    """
    Calculate discounted price with percentage off.
    Args:
        price: Original price in dollars (must be positive)
        discount_percent: Discount percentage (0-100)
    Returns:
        Final price after discount, rounded to 2 decimals
    Raises:
        ValueError: If price is negative or discount > 100
    Examples:
        >>> calculate_discount(100.0, 20.0)
        80.0
        >>> calculate_discount(50.0, 50.0)
        25.0
    Note:
        Discount percent is capped at 100% (minimum price of 0)
    """
    if price < 0:
        raise ValueError("Price cannot be negative")
    if discount_percent > 100:
        raise ValueError("Discount cannot exceed 100%")
    discount_amount = price * (discount_percent / 100)
    return round(price - discount_amount, 2)
```

### JavaScript (JSDoc)

```javascript
/**
 * Calculate discounted price with percentage off
 *
 * @param {number} price - Original price in dollars (must be positive)
 * @param {number} discountPercent - Discount percentage (0-100)
 * @returns {number} Final price after discount, rounded to 2 decimals
