## What it does

The skill acts as a creative director. Raw user text never reaches the API — it is turned into a prompt built from a six-component reasoning brief covering subject, action, context and the rest. A domain mode is picked next: Editorial for headers, Product for product shots, Landscape for backgrounds, UI/Web for technical illustrations, Infographic for data posts, Abstract for dividers. Each image type carries its own aspect ratio and resolution: hero at 16:9 in 2K or 4K, OG card at 16:9 in 1K, inline images at 16:9 or 4:3.

The default route is a direct Gemini call from `generate_hero.py` using `GOOGLE_AI_API_KEY`, with the `google-genai` SDK installed. If that fails, the script falls back to premium stock and then Openverse. The optional MCP server `@ycse/nanobanana-mcp` only supports image model IDs Google shut down on 2026-06-25, so install it only if you already have a working server. To check availability, call `get_image_history` with `conversation_id: "default"` — it has no side effects.

Before the first paid call the skill must state the model, size, image count and estimated cost, then wait for an explicit yes. That yes covers only that count. `generate_hero.py` can try up to four model IDs in turn when the first one fails, so budget for the worst case. A refusal does not break the workflow: run the script with `env -u GOOGLE_AI_API_KEY` to use the free stock rungs, and the orchestrator gets a single line in its fallback summary.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --skill blog-image -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/blog-image/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/blog-image/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --skill blog-image -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/blog-image/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --skill blog-image -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/blog-image/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AgriciDaniel/claude-blog blog-image
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/blog-image/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --skill blog-image -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --path skills/blog-image
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/blog-image/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --skill blog-image -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-blog/tree/HEAD/skills/blog-image/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate a hero image for a draft post
- build a 1200x630 OG card for social sharing
- edit an existing blog image from written instructions
- match aspect ratio and resolution to the image type
- check the API key and pick a generation route

## Example prompts
- /blog image generate hero for a post about CI/CD, editorial, dark tones
- /blog image edit content/posts/hero.png remove the text from the image
- /blog image setup

  Paid Gemini image generation for blog heroes, inline illustrations, and OG

# Blog Image - AI Image Generation for Blog Content

Bundled paths below use host Markdown substitution of `${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}`;
it is not an exported shell variable. Resolve them before execution, quote
paths, and refuse nonabsolute overrides. Pass `blog_reference_root` resolved
from `${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/../blog/references`, `blog_template_root` from
`${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/../blog/templates`, and needed sibling roots to agents.
Read the main reference `orchestration-details.md` before loading project
context; pass only its helper-fenced output to downstream agents.

## Cost and consent gate (mandatory, read first)

This skill spends the user's Google AI credit and writes image files.

- **What it spends:** one paid Gemini image call per generated or edited
  image. `generate_hero.py` can try up to four model IDs in turn when the
  first fails, so budget for that worst case. The stock-photo and Openverse
  rungs are free but may need their own keys.
- **Cost basis:** per-image prices at
  https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/pricing. On 2026-10-12 that page listed
  `gemini-nano-banana-2.1` at $0.0336 (1K), $0.0504 (2K), $0.113 (4K) and
  `gemini-3.1-flash-image` at $0.067 (1K). Re-read it before quoting a number.
- **What it writes:** `hero.<ext>` and `hero-credit.txt` in the draft folder
  (direct API), `~/Documents/nanobanana_generated/` (optional MCP), and
  `~/.claude/settings.json` (setup only).
- **Consent:** before the FIRST paid call or file write in a session, tell
  the user the model, size, image count, and estimated cost (count times price)
  and wait for an explicit yes. The yes covers only that count. Asking for a
  blog post does not by itself consent to a paid image call.
