## What it does

This skill uncovers what practitioners and users say about a topic across Reddit, Hacker News, X, YouTube, dev.to, and Medium. It runs without social media API keys. Instead, the agent executes 4 to 8 targeted WebSearch queries using `site:` operators and date filters like `after:YYYY-MM-DD`. Phase 0 runs pre-flight keyword-trap checks across four classes to avoid wasting search calls on overly literal or generic queries.

Results are collected into a secure temporary JSON file via Python `tempfile.mkstemp` with 0600 permissions. The skill relies on bundled references resolved from `${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/../blog/references`, which will fail if copied away from its parent `claude-blog` repository. Snippets from search results are strictly handled as untrusted data to shield downstream agents from indirect prompt injection attacks.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --skill blog-discourse -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/blog-discourse/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/blog-discourse/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --skill blog-discourse -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/blog-discourse/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --skill blog-discourse -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/blog-discourse/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AgriciDaniel/claude-blog blog-discourse
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/blog-discourse/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --skill blog-discourse -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --path skills/blog-discourse
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/blog-discourse/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AgriciDaniel/claude-blog --skill blog-discourse -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-blog/tree/HEAD/skills/blog-discourse/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- gather recent practitioner discussions across community platforms within 30 or 90 days
- extract public consensus and counter-arguments without paying for platform APIs
- compile social listening findings into a structured `DISCOURSE.md` brief
- decompose a topic entity into separate search angles before querying

## Example prompts
- /blog discourse "next.js server actions"
- /blog discourse "vector databases" --days 90
- /blog discourse "tailwind css" --output notes/discourse.md --format json

  Research what people are actually saying about a topic in the last 30 days

# Blog Discourse: Real Discourse Research, API-Free

Bundled paths below use host Markdown substitution of `${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}`;
it is not an exported shell variable. Resolve them before execution, quote
paths, and refuse nonabsolute overrides. Pass `blog_reference_root` resolved
from `${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/../blog/references`, `blog_template_root` from
`${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/../blog/templates`, and needed sibling roots to agents.
Read the main reference `orchestration-details.md` before loading project
context; pass only its helper-fenced output to downstream agents.

Produces DISCOURSE.md: a structured brief of what practitioners said about <topic> on the public web in the last 30 days. It is the recency + engagement lens that `blog-researcher` (authority-first) lacks, asking what practitioners and customers are actually saying about this topic right now.

Adapted from the methodology of `last30days-skill` (Matt Van Horn, MIT, https://github.com/mvanhorn/last30days-skill). The upstream uses platform APIs; this sub-skill uses WebSearch with platform-targeted site operators. No API keys required.

## Commands

| Command | Purpose |
|---|---|
| `/blog discourse <topic>` | Produce a discourse brief at project-root `DISCOURSE.md` |
| `/blog discourse <topic> --days 90` | Widen the freshness window from 30 to 90 days |
| `/blog discourse <topic> --input results.json` | Skip search; build the brief from a pre-gathered results file. The flag name matches `scripts/discourse_research.py --input` directly. |
| `/blog discourse <topic> --output path.md` | Write markdown to a chosen output path and print structured JSON without markdown to stdout. |
| `/blog discourse <topic> --format json` | Print the full JSON brief to stdout when no `--output` path is used. |
```
