## What it does

The skill tells the agent how to build and edit geometry in Blockbench over MCP. Cubes take `from` and `to` coordinates, meshes use indexed faces, and there are tools for spheres, cylinders, extruding selected face regions, subdividing triangles and quads, welding vertices, and a headless knife for cubes. A separate set of tools handles hierarchy: `add_group`, `list_outline`, `duplicate_element`, `find_elements_by_criteria`, `filter_by_material`.

Before a big geometry redesign, the skill says to pick a priority — appearance, performance, or a balance of both — and set an element and face budget. Faces no required view or pose reveals are meant to be deleted, because a real-time mesh does not have to be watertight. Thin detail can float on planes instead of being cut into the surface when its depth stays fixed as the camera moves.

Meshes need a format with mesh support enabled, normally `free` (Generic Model), so call `get_capabilities` first. Extrusion only works on faces; edge and vertex modes are unsupported. The knife over MCP cuts cubes along one axis, and `slice_cubes_to_block_grid` splits cubes at Bedrock block boundaries. `inspect_block_bounds` checks elements against the 30×30×30 oversized block limit.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-modeling -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/blockbench-modeling/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/blockbench-modeling/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-modeling -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/blockbench-modeling/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-modeling -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/blockbench-modeling/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project blockbench-modeling
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/blockbench-modeling/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-modeling -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --path skills/blockbench-modeling
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/blockbench-modeling/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-modeling -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project/tree/HEAD/skills/blockbench-modeling/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- block out a character silhouette from cubes with exact coordinates
- extrude mesh faces to raise a recessed detail
- start a round part from a sphere or cylinder mesh
- clean up model hierarchy with groups and renames
- check whether cubes exceed the Bedrock oversized block limit

## Example prompts
- place a cube `body` from [-4, 0, -2] to [4, 12, 2] with faces enabled
- extrude the selected mesh faces outward by 2 units
- show the model outline and rename the group `arm_left` to `arm_l`

# Blockbench Modeling

Build 3D models using cubes and meshes in Blockbench.

## Plan the Shape and Target

Before a new model or substantial geometry redesign, resolve the user's appearance/accuracy, performance, or balanced preference through [Blockbench use](../blockbench-use/SKILL.md). Follow [appearance and performance planning](../blockbench-use/references/appearance-and-performance.md) to set a working element/face budget and choose which details belong in geometry, UV tiles, or PBR. Prototype and count one repeated section before multiplying it; braces, infills, foot plates, and fasteners should not automatically become separate cubes.

Spend faces on silhouette, parallax, and deformation. Delete faces no required view or pose reveals, since real-time meshes need not be watertight. Let parts intersect instead of stitching edge loops around the joint, and float thin detail planes instead of cutting detail in. Keep geometry for recesses and openings whose depth must change as the camera moves. See [real-time asset planning](../blockbench-use/references/real-time-asset-planning.md) sections 4–6 for per-target budgets and face-removal rules.

Use [format and delivery guidance](../blockbench-use/references/formats-and-delivery.md) when selecting a format or exporting. Block out the silhouette and proportions before UV layout and surface detail. Match polygon density to visible shape or deformation needs; automatic subdivision is not a quality step by itself.
