## What it does

The skill answers capability questions and helps plan a new project. It lists tools, editor modes and registered formats, then routes you to the rest of the bundle: modeling, texturing, animation, particles, PBR materials, Hytale, native armatures, Java display transforms and Bedrock face materials.

Inside you get a workflow table, calls like `get_capabilities: include_tools=true` and `list_modes`, pseudocode for building a small Bedrock entity with an idle animation, plus sections on armatures, vertex weights and `minecraft:material_instances`. The tool list comes from the live server, so this skill can describe operations newer than an installed bundle. `project` may come back as `null`, and detailed format flags can be `null` too — that reads as unknown, not off.

Load `blockbench-use` first for content changes; this one is the overview. A tool's success text does not replace inspecting the result, and after a topology change or undo/redo you need to read the data again. Switching mode does not change the project format, and Animate registers as `animate`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-mcp-overview -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/blockbench-mcp-overview/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/blockbench-mcp-overview/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-mcp-overview -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/blockbench-mcp-overview/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-mcp-overview -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/blockbench-mcp-overview/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project blockbench-mcp-overview
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/blockbench-mcp-overview/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-mcp-overview -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --path skills/blockbench-mcp-overview
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/blockbench-mcp-overview/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-mcp-overview -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project/tree/HEAD/skills/blockbench-mcp-overview/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- see which tools the Blockbench MCP server currently exposes
- pick the right skill for texturing, animation, particles or PBR
- plan a new Bedrock entity project from scratch
- switch editor mode and refresh tool availability
- check whether a format supports native armatures or display transforms

## Example prompts
- What tools does the running Blockbench MCP expose? Call get_capabilities with include_tools=true
- Show the current mode and available modes with list_modes
- Create a project named robot in the bedrock format with a body group and an idle animation

# Blockbench MCP Overview

For content changes, load [blockbench-use](../blockbench-use/SKILL.md) first. The running server's tool list and schemas determine available operations; this source skill can describe tools newer than an installed bundle. Tool status and success text are not a substitute for result inspection.

## Discover the Host and Workflow

```
get_capabilities: include_tools=true
# → blockbench, plugin, project, format, formats, tools, notes
list_modes
# → current_mode, modes[{id, available, selected, ...}]
```

`project` may be `null`. Use exact registered format IDs: Generic Model is normally `free`. Inspect a prospective format with `get_capabilities: format_id="free"` without switching projects. Detailed feature flags can be `null` (unknown); compact listings distinguish true flags and unknown flags. Installed plugin formats are supported through discovery rather than a fixed whitelist in these skills.

When a tool depends on editor state, use `list_modes` and `set_mode: mode_id="<returned ID>"`, then refresh availability. Animate uses `animate`, not `animation`. Changing mode does not change project format.
