# blockbench-animation

A skill that gives your agent MCP tools for animating in Blockbench: keyframes, bone rigs, curves and the timeline. Useful when a 3D model needs to move.

## What it does

The skill hands the agent a set of MCP tools for Blockbench animation. Through them it creates animations with keyframes, edits `position`, `rotation` and `scale` channels, tunes curves and drives playback on the timeline. Separate tools cover bone rigging, batch operations (offset, scale, reverse, mirror) and copying animation data between bones.

Pick the animation type before modeling, because it changes the geometry. Minecraft supports only rigid bone animation: split each bend into separate parts at the joint and overlap them so rotation opens no gaps. Skinned deformation needs a Generic Model armature with vertex weights and an exporter that carries the rig. No MCP tools author morph targets, so the skill substitutes bones, visibility keyframes or texture flipbooks.

Animation times are seconds, and timeline FPS controls snapping rather than game playback rate. Group tools operate on Blockbench groups, not on an `ArmatureBone` — a similar name means nothing here, so check which rig you actually have. Batch operations run against the active animation, and `selection="all"` pulls in hidden animators too.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-animation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/blockbench-animation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/blockbench-animation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-animation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/blockbench-animation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-animation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/blockbench-animation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project blockbench-animation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/blockbench-animation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-animation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --path skills/blockbench-animation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/blockbench-animation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jasonjgardner/blockbench-mcp-project --skill blockbench-animation -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- spin a multi-mesh object around one axis
- block out a walk cycle on existing leg bones
- smooth rotation curves in the graph editor
- double the timing of every keyframe
- copy animation data from one bone to another

## Example prompts
- Create a spin animation, 4 seconds long, rotating the logo_root group linearly around Y
- Build a 1 second walk cycle for leg_left and leg_right, then smooth the curves
- Scale all keyframe times in the active animation by 2 and set the length to 2 seconds

# Blockbench Animation

Create animations for 3D models using Blockbench MCP tools.

## Rig and Motion Decisions

Confirm the format's animation support and intended exporter before animating. Group-based `bone_rigging` and `manage_keyframes` operate on Blockbench groups; native armature bones and vertex weights are a separate rig type with their own tools. Do not assume these group tools animate an `ArmatureBone` merely because it has a similar name. See [MCP overview](../blockbench-mcp-overview/SKILL.md) for discovery and [format/delivery guidance](../blockbench-use/references/formats-and-delivery.md) for target requirements.

Choose the animation type before modeling, because it changes the geometry.
- Minecraft supports only rigid bone (node) animation. Split each bend into separate parts at the joint, and overlap them so rotation opens no gaps.
- Skinned deformation needs a Generic Model armature with vertex weights, edge loops at joints, and an exporter that carries the rig.
- No MCP tools author morph targets. Substitute bones, visibility keyframes, or texture flipbooks.

See [real-time asset planning](../blockbench-use/references/real-time-asset-planning.md) section 10.

Place pivots at joints and build outward through the hierarchy. Block important poses and timing first, then refine weight, contact, anticipation and follow-through as the action requires. Smooth interpolation can overshoot, and mechanical motion can be continuous; choose curves to suit the movement rather than assigning one interpolation to a whole genre. The official [Blockbench overview](https://blockbench.net/wiki/guides/blockbench-overview-tips/) explains hierarchy, pivots and timeline controls.
