## What it does

This skill packages runnable BLIP-2 examples for the Salesforce model that bridges a frozen vision encoder and a frozen LLM through Q-Former. You get two install paths and code for basic captioning, VQA, and the LAVIS route. Weights come from HuggingFace, with OPT (2.7B, 6.7B) and FlanT5 (XL, XXL) as language backends.

Nothing gets fine-tuned. Q-Former carries roughly 188M parameters while the vision and language backbones stay frozen, so the bottleneck is your hardware, not your dataset. `blip2-opt-2.7b` needs about 4GB and `blip2-flan-t5-xxl` about 13GB, which is worth checking before you pick a variant.

The samples run in `torch.float16` with `device_map="auto"`, so they expect a GPU. Dependencies are `transformers>=4.30.0`, `torch>=1.10.0` and `Pillow`, or `salesforce-lavis` if you prefer the official Salesforce library. For instruction-following multimodal chat, the skill points you to LLaVA or InstructBLIP instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill blip-2-vision-language -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill blip-2 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/blip-2/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/blip-2/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill blip-2 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/blip-2/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill blip-2 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/blip-2/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs blip-2
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/blip-2/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill blip-2 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 18-multimodal/blip-2
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/blip-2/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill blip-2 -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs/tree/HEAD/18-multimodal/blip-2/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate a natural-language caption for an image
- answer a question about what is in a picture without training
- match an image against a text description
- run a batch of images and questions in one pass
- route visual tasks through an LLM's reasoning

## Example prompts
- Write a BLIP-2 script that captions `photo.jpg` with `Salesforce/blip2-opt-2.7b`
- Set up VQA and ask the model what color the car in the image is
- Process four images with four questions and print each answer pair

# BLIP-2: Vision-Language Pre-training

Comprehensive guide to using Salesforce's BLIP-2 for vision-language tasks with frozen image encoders and large language models.

## When to use BLIP-2

**Use BLIP-2 when:**
- Need high-quality image captioning with natural descriptions
- Building visual question answering (VQA) systems
- Require zero-shot image-text understanding without task-specific training
- Want to leverage LLM reasoning for visual tasks
- Building multimodal conversational AI
- Need image-text retrieval or matching

**Key features:**
- **Q-Former architecture**: Lightweight query transformer bridges vision and language
- **Frozen backbone efficiency**: No need to fine-tune large vision/language models
- **Multiple LLM backends**: OPT (2.7B, 6.7B) and FlanT5 (XL, XXL)
- **Zero-shot capabilities**: Strong performance without task-specific training
- **Efficient training**: Only trains Q-Former (~188M parameters)
- **State-of-the-art results**: Beats larger models on VQA benchmarks

**Use alternatives instead:**
- **LLaVA**: For instruction-following multimodal chat
- **InstructBLIP**: For improved instruction-following (BLIP-2 successor)
- **GPT-4V/Claude 3**: For production multimodal chat (proprietary)
- **CLIP**: For simple image-text similarity without generation
- **Flamingo**: For few-shot visual learning

## Quick start

### Installation

```bash
# HuggingFace Transformers (recommended)
pip install transformers accelerate torch Pillow
# Or LAVIS library (Salesforce official)
pip install salesforce-lavis
```

### Basic image captioning

```python
import torch
from PIL import Image
from transformers import Blip2Processor, Blip2ForConditionalGeneration
# Load model and processor
processor = Blip2Processor.from_pretrained("Salesforce/blip2-opt-2.7b")
model = Blip2ForConditionalGeneration.from_pretrained(
    "Salesforce/blip2-opt-2.7b",
    torch_dtype=torch.float16,
    device_map="auto"
)
# Load image
image = Image.open("photo.jpg").convert("RGB")
# Generate caption
inputs = processor(images=image, return_tensors="pt").to("cuda", torch.float16)
generated_ids = model.generate(**inputs, max_new_tokens=50)
