## What it does

This is a diagnostic pass you run before you call a draft finished. The skill walks your text through four frameworks: a cognitive bias check (confirmation bias, curse of knowledge, bias blind spot), Socratic questioning, a content checklist, and a missing-elements analysis. It separates two kinds of gaps. Blind spots come from the methodology or viewpoint itself, so you either change the angle or state the limitation. Blank spots sit inside your current approach and just need more coverage.

Genre tables point at the usual suspects. Technical writing tends to suffer from expert blindness and a missing conceptual foundation; business writing assumes the reader shares your organizational context; advice pieces fall into survivorship bias. Detection techniques include an outsider test, gap-finding questions, and a structural audit that lists each section's claim, its evidence, and the objections you did and did not answer. A remediation table maps each gap type to an action.

Run it on a draft, not on a blank page. There is nothing to analyze until words exist. Watch for the perfection paralysis the skill itself warns about: keep hunting gaps and you never ship. The author suggests setting a threshold up front and fixing only what undermines the argument. The skill lives in the `jwynia/agent-skills` repository under MIT.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill blind-spot-detective -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/blind-spot-detective/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/blind-spot-detective/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill blind-spot-detective -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/blind-spot-detective/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill blind-spot-detective -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/blind-spot-detective/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills blind-spot-detective
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/blind-spot-detective/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill blind-spot-detective -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/general/writing/analysis/blind-spot-detective
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/blind-spot-detective/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill blind-spot-detective -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- find which counter-arguments a draft never addresses
- check whether the text assumes knowledge the reader lacks
- tell an inherent limitation apart from a fixable gap
- list missing perspectives and concrete examples
- catch abstract claims that no case study backs up

## Example prompts
- run blind-spot-detective on my draft and list the blind spots
- what objections did I leave unanswered in this piece?
- check this article for curse of knowledge: what did I fail to explain

# Blind Spot Detective

## Purpose

Systematically identify what's missing in non-fiction writing—both blind spots (inherent limitations of your approach) and blank spots (gaps that could be addressed). Provides frameworks for finding omissions, testing assumptions, and ensuring comprehensive coverage.

## Core Principle

**What you can't see matters more than what you can.** Identifying what's missing is harder than recognizing what's included. Systematic interrogation reveals gaps that casual review misses.

---

## Blind Spots vs. Blank Spots

| Type | Definition | Solution |
|------|------------|----------|
| **Blind Spots** | Limitations inherent to your methodology, theory, or perspective | Adjust your approach or acknowledge limitations |
| **Blank Spots** | Gaps that could be addressed within your current approach | Expand coverage within existing framework |

**Key insight:** Understanding which type of gap you're dealing with determines whether to change your approach or simply expand it.

---

## Framework 1: Cognitive Bias Check

### Confirmation Bias
Processing information that confirms existing beliefs while ignoring contradictions.

**Self-check:**
- Have I primarily sought sources supporting my views?
- Have I given fair consideration to counter-evidence?
- Am I dismissing perspectives without adequate examination?

### Curse of Knowledge
Assuming readers share your specialized knowledge.

**Self-check:**
- Have I defined specialized terminology?
- Am I assuming background knowledge readers might lack?
- Would someone new to this topic understand?

### Bias Blind Spot
Recognizing biases in others but not yourself.

**Self-check:**
- Have I critically examined my own assumptions?
- Am I applying the same standards to opposing views?
- Have I invited critique from different perspectives?

---

## Framework 2: Socratic Questioning
