# blender-rendering

Configures Cycles and EEVEE engines in Blender, managing samples, denoising, and AgX color transforms. Useful when asking an agent to produce renders or animations.

## What it does

The skill applies production presets for Blender rendering instead of unreliable defaults. Cycles handles photoreal passes, caustics, and glass materials with 256 samples and OpenImageDenoise or OptiX denoising. A draft mode drops samples to 64 at 50% resolution for quick iterations. Stylized scenes route to EEVEE.

The recipes manage compatibility across Blender releases. EEVEE changes its engine identifier from `BLENDER_EEVEE` in 4.1 to `BLENDER_EEVEE_NEXT` in 4.2, then back to `BLENDER_EEVEE` in 5.0. Color management switches to AgX instead of Standard to prevent highlight clipping. A camera guard is mandatory before calling `bpy.ops.render.render()`. Without an active camera, Blender halts with an error.

Execution depends on an active Blender MCP server. The instructions advise sticking to the official MCP backend throughout the task.

## Requirements
- Works with: Blender

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RobLe3/cc-blender-skill --skill blender-rendering -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/blender-rendering/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/blender-rendering/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RobLe3/cc-blender-skill --skill blender-rendering -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/blender-rendering/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RobLe3/cc-blender-skill --skill blender-rendering -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/blender-rendering/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RobLe3/cc-blender-skill blender-rendering
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/blender-rendering/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RobLe3/cc-blender-skill --skill blender-rendering -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RobLe3/cc-blender-skill --path plugin/skills/blender-rendering
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/blender-rendering/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RobLe3/cc-blender-skill --skill blender-rendering -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/RobLe3/cc-blender-skill/tree/HEAD/plugin/skills/blender-rendering/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- configure Cycles for photorealistic rendering
- adapt EEVEE options across different Blender releases
- enable denoising with OpenImageDenoise or OptiX
- apply AgX color management to avoid highlight blowout
- verify camera assignment before triggering a render

## Example prompts
- Render this scene with Cycles and high quality denoising
- Make a quick draft render of the current frame at half resolution
- Configure EEVEE settings and export the final image

## MCP backend

Use when: Any image or animation render output request in Blender.

Before the first Blender call, read [../text-to-blender/references/mcp-backends.md](../text-to-blender/references/mcp-backends.md). Prefer official MCP for shared capabilities; preserve the selected backend for the whole task. Tool names in recipes are client/legacy examples: map them through that reference and its agent-host guide.
# Blender Rendering

Render efficiently. The defaults are wrong for production; the recipes below are tuned for the common cases.

## Engine decision tree

```
Need photoreal? Caustics? Accurate SSS? Glass-rich?
├── YES → Cycles (path tracer)
└── NO  → Need speed? Stylized look? Animation iteration?
          ├── YES → EEVEE
          └── NO  → Cycles (default fallback for photoreal)
```

**Quick rule**:
- Stills, archviz, product, hero shots → **Cycles**
- Animation previews, motion graphics, stylized → **EEVEE**

## Reference-look handoff

If the goal is to match an original/reference image rather than make a generally attractive render, chain-load `reference-look-calibration`. It owns measurement of hue/saturation/value, object extent, glow/aura color, and before/after look metrics. This skill should then apply the requested material/lighting/render changes within that calibrated target.

## Recipes

### Recipe 1 — Cycles production preset (256 samples + denoise)

```python
import bpy
scene = bpy.context.scene
scene.render.engine = 'CYCLES'
scene.cycles.device = 'GPU'
# Sampling
scene.cycles.samples = 256
scene.cycles.use_adaptive_sampling = True
scene.cycles.adaptive_threshold = 0.01
