# bdg

A skill that hands your agent a CLI for a real Chrome: navigation, clicks, forms, network and console reads. Handy when you need to confirm a UI change in a running app.

## What it does

The skill teaches an agent to work with `bdg`, a CLI built on the Chrome DevTools Protocol. You open a session with `bdg <url>`, then reach for `dom query`, `dom inspect`, `dom fill`, `dom click`, `console`, `network list` and `eval`. Screenshots are for visual proof only — `dom inspect` reports box, layout, fonts, colors and contrast as text. The loop is: start, look, act, read the reported effect, check for errors.

The binary is a separate install: `npm i -g browser-debugger-cli`, and `bdg --version` tells you whether it landed. A session stays up until `bdg stop`, with no timeout, so against an HMR dev server you start it once and keep it. Chrome opens as a window on macOS; pass `--headless` for unattended runs. Several sessions can coexist, each with its own Chrome, named through `--session`.

There is also `bdg attach`, which hooks onto a tab you already have open. bdg reads `DevToolsActivePort` from the Chrome profile, the user turns on remote debugging at `chrome://inspect/#remote-debugging` and approves the prompt in the browser. The tab is never reloaded and keeps its state, though requests it made earlier are gone. To carry a login between sessions, save state to a file with `bdg state save /tmp/login.json` and start with `--state`. That file holds secrets, so keep it out of the repo.

## Requirements
- Works with: Chrome

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add szymdzum/browser-debugger-cli --skill bdg -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/bdg/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/bdg/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add szymdzum/browser-debugger-cli --skill bdg -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/bdg/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add szymdzum/browser-debugger-cli --skill bdg -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/bdg/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install szymdzum/browser-debugger-cli bdg
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/bdg/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add szymdzum/browser-debugger-cli --skill bdg -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/szymdzum/browser-debugger-cli --path .claude/skills/bdg
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/bdg/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add szymdzum/browser-debugger-cli --skill bdg -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/szymdzum/browser-debugger-cli/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/bdg/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- confirm a button click actually triggered navigation
- surface console errors after a form submit
- read an element's box and fonts without a screenshot
- catch 4xx and 5xx responses on the current page
- attach to an open tab without disturbing its state

## Example prompts
- Open `https://example.com` headless and tell me what's on the page
- Fill `input[name='email']` with `a@b.co`, click `button[type='submit']`, then show what changed
- Check the console for errors and list network requests with 4xx and 5xx codes

description: Use bdg CLI to drive and debug a real Chrome via Chrome DevTools Protocol - navigate, click, fill and submit forms, check what an action changed (navigation, new messages, pending requests), inspect elements without screenshots (box, layout, fonts, colors, a11y), read network requests and console errors, run JavaScript, and call any CDP method. Use this skill when you need to verify a UI change in a running app, debug a page, automate a browser flow, or scrape dynamic content.

# bdg - Browser Automation CLI

Requires the `bdg` binary: `npm i -g browser-debugger-cli` (`bdg --version` to check).

## Quick Start

The loop: start, look, act, read the reported effect, check errors. Screenshots only for visual proof.

```bash
bdg https://example.com --headless      # Start a session (Chrome + daemon); stays up until bdg stop
bdg dom query "button"                  # Find elements: [0], [1], ... (0-based); class="px-2 +4" = first class + 4 more (all in --json classes, [] when none, or dom get <index> --json domContext.classes)
                                         # Human output escapes " \ and newlines in values and cuts them at 40 chars (--json/--raw keep them whole); same-origin links show as paths (/register/), others with their scheme; an icon-only button shows its name: [2] <button class="icon"> "Open menu"
bdg dom inspect "button.primary"        # Box, layout, font, colors + contrast, without a screenshot
bdg dom fill "input[name='email']" "a@b.co"
bdg dom click "button[type='submit']"   # Prints what changed: navigation, new text, or no effect
bdg console --level error               # Anything thrown?
bdg console --follow --ndjson           # Tail console output: one JSON record per line ({type:"page",navigationId,url} per page, {type:"message",level,text,…} per message; `type` is the record kind, `level` the console type (error, warning, info, log, debug, …) that `console --json` gives as `messages[].type`)
bdg network list --preset errors        # 4xx/5xx of the current page (--page all: earlier pages too)
bdg stop                                # Only when completely done
```

On macOS bdg opens a Chrome window by default; pass `--headless` when running unattended (it is the default over SSH, in CI and on Linux without a display).

## Sessions

```bash
bdg status                    # Current session (bdg status --verbose for diagnostics)
