## What it does

This skill covers wiring GSAP into React components without leaving animations behind. The examples use the `useGSAP` hook from `@gsap/react`: a basic call, dependencies, and the returned `context` and `contextSafe` for event handlers. A separate section handles refs — a single element, an array of elements, and a dynamic list kept in a `Map`.

Cleanup gets its own treatment. `useGSAP` kills animations on unmount by itself, while the manual path shows `gsap.context()` with `ctx.revert()` returned from `useEffect`. Timelines are stored in a `useRef` and driven with `play`, `reverse`, `restart`, plus progress updates from a prop.

You need `gsap` and `@gsap/react` installed for any of it to run. The file ends mid-way through a ScrollTrigger section, so if you copy that part, register the plugin where you use it — skip that and the scroll animation never fires.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Bbeierle12/Skill-MCP-Claude --skill gsap-react -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/gsap-react/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/gsap-react/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Bbeierle12/Skill-MCP-Claude --skill gsap-react -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/gsap-react/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Bbeierle12/Skill-MCP-Claude --skill gsap-react -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/gsap-react/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Bbeierle12/Skill-MCP-Claude gsap-react
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/gsap-react/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Bbeierle12/Skill-MCP-Claude --skill gsap-react -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Bbeierle12/Skill-MCP-Claude --path skills/gsap-react
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/gsap-react/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Bbeierle12/Skill-MCP-Claude --skill gsap-react -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- animate a React component with GSAP
- clean up tweens on unmount without leaks
- scope selectors to a single container
- re-run an animation when a prop changes
- build refs for a dynamic list of elements

## Example prompts
- Animate the list items on mount with useGSAP and a stagger
- Build a GSAP timeline with play and reverse buttons
- Why does my GSAP animation keep running after the component unmounts?

# GSAP React Integration

React-specific patterns for GSAP animations.

## Quick Start

```bash
npm install gsap @gsap/react
```

```tsx
import { useGSAP } from '@gsap/react';
import gsap from 'gsap';
function Component() {
  const containerRef = useRef(null);
  useGSAP(() => {
    gsap.to('.box', { x: 200, duration: 1 });
  }, { scope: containerRef });
  return (
    <div ref={containerRef}>
      <div className="box">Animated</div>
    </div>
  );
}
```

## useGSAP Hook

### Basic Usage

```tsx
import { useGSAP } from '@gsap/react';
import gsap from 'gsap';
function AnimatedComponent() {
  const container = useRef(null);
  useGSAP(() => {
    // All GSAP animations here
    gsap.from('.item', {
      opacity: 0,
      y: 50,
      stagger: 0.1
    });
  }, { scope: container }); // Scope limits selector queries
  return (
    <div ref={container}>
      <div className="item">Item 1</div>
      <div className="item">Item 2</div>
      <div className="item">Item 3</div>
    </div>
  );
}
```

### With Dependencies

```tsx
function AnimatedComponent({ isOpen }) {
  const container = useRef(null);
  useGSAP(() => {
    gsap.to('.drawer', {
      height: isOpen ? 'auto' : 0,
      duration: 0.3
    });
  }, { scope: container, dependencies: [isOpen] });
  return (
    <div ref={container}>
      <div className="drawer">Content</div>
    </div>
  );
}
```

### Returning Context

```tsx
function Component() {
  const container = useRef(null);
  const { context, contextSafe } = useGSAP(() => {
    gsap.to('.box', { x: 200 });
  }, { scope: container });
  // Use contextSafe for event handlers
  const handleClick = contextSafe(() => {
    gsap.to('.box', { rotation: 360 });
  });
  return (
    <div ref={container}>
      <div className="box" onClick={handleClick}>Click me</div>
    </div>
  );
}
```

## Ref Patterns

### Single Element Ref

```tsx
function SingleElement() {
  const boxRef = useRef(null);
  useGSAP(() => {
    gsap.to(boxRef.current, {
      x: 200,
      rotation: 360,
      duration: 1
    });
  });
  return <div ref={boxRef}>Box</div>;
}
```

### Multiple Element Refs

```tsx
function MultipleElements() {
  const itemsRef = useRef([]);
  useGSAP(() => {
    gsap.from(itemsRef.current, {
      opacity: 0,
      y: 30,
      stagger: 0.1
    });
  });
  return (
    <div>
      {[1, 2, 3].map((item, i) => (
        <div
          key={item}
          ref={el => itemsRef.current[i] = el}
        >
          Item {item}
        </div>
      ))}
    </div>
  );
}
```

### Dynamic Refs

```tsx
function DynamicList({ items }) {
  const itemsRef = useRef(new Map());
  useGSAP(() => {
    gsap.from(Array.from(itemsRef.current.values()), {
      opacity: 0,
