## What it does

The skill kicks in while you write BUILD files or hunt down a failing build. Its workflow covers seven areas: workspace layout with `MODULE.bazel` and `BUILD`, sample `cc_library`, `cc_binary` and `cc_test` rules, dependency handling through Bzlmod, toolchain registration, remote execution, and sandbox debugging.

A separate section deals with queries. `bazel query` finds direct and reverse dependencies, `bazel cquery` answers with configuration in mind, and `bazel aquery` dumps the action graph with compiler flags. Sandbox errors get their own list, from a missing file to a write outside the sandbox, each with a pointer to the fix. For deeper C++ toolchain setup the skill points at `references/bazel-cpp-toolchain.md`.

Examples assume Bazel 6 or newer: `MODULE.bazel` carries Bzlmod dependencies, while `WORKSPACE` stays for features that still need it. On an older release without Bzlmod, expect to rewrite those snippets for `WORKSPACE`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill bazel -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/bazel/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/bazel/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill bazel -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/bazel/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill bazel -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/bazel/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills bazel
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/bazel/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill bazel -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --path skills/build-systems/bazel
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/bazel/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill bazel -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- write a BUILD file for a C++ library with external deps
- track down a sandbox failure in a Bazel build
- find every target that depends on a given one
- register a custom C++ toolchain for a platform
- move a project from CMake to Bazel

## Example prompts
- Write a BUILD file for the `mylib` library with abseil and googletest deps
- Why does `//src:main` fail inside the sandbox? Rebuild with `--sandbox_debug` and explain the output
- List the targets that depend on `//lib:mylib` using `bazel query`

# Bazel

## Purpose

Guide agents through Bazel for C/C++ projects: writing BUILD files, cc_library/cc_binary rules, toolchain registration, remote execution, dependency graph queries, Bzlmod dependency management, and sandbox debugging.

## Triggers

- "How do I write a Bazel BUILD file for a C++ library?"
- "How do I add external dependencies with Bzlmod?"
- "How do I debug Bazel sandbox errors?"
- "How do I query the Bazel dependency graph?"
- "How do I set up remote execution with Bazel?"
- "How do I register a custom C++ toolchain?"

## Workflow

### 1. Workspace structure

```
my-project/
├── MODULE.bazel         # Bzlmod dependency file (Bazel ≥6)
├── WORKSPACE            # legacy (still needed for some features)
├── BUILD                # root build file
├── src/
│   ├── BUILD
│   └── main.cc
└── lib/
    ├── BUILD
    ├── mylib.cc
    └── mylib.h
```

### 2. Basic BUILD file — cc_library / cc_binary

```python
# lib/BUILD
cc_library(
    name = "mylib",
    srcs = ["mylib.cc"],
    hdrs = ["mylib.h"],
    copts = ["-Wall", "-Wextra", "-std=c++17"],
    visibility = ["//visibility:public"],
    deps = [
        "@com_google_absl//absl/strings",     # external dep
        "//util:helpers",                      # internal dep
    ],
)
cc_test(
    name = "mylib_test",
    srcs = ["mylib_test.cc"],
    deps = [
        ":mylib",
        "@com_google_googletest//:gtest_main",
    ],
)
```

```python
# src/BUILD
cc_binary(
    name = "main",
    srcs = ["main.cc"],
    deps = ["//lib:mylib"],
    linkopts = ["-lpthread"],
)
```

```bash
# Build
bazel build //src:main
bazel build //...           # build everything
# Test
bazel test //lib:mylib_test
bazel test //...            # run all tests
# Run
bazel run //src:main -- arg1 arg2
# Output path
bazel-bin/src/main
```

### 3. Bzlmod — modern dependency management

```python
# MODULE.bazel
module(
    name = "my_project",
    version = "1.0",
)
bazel_dep(name = "abseil-cpp", version = "20240116.2")
bazel_dep(name = "googletest", version = "1.14.0")
bazel_dep(name = "rules_cc", version = "0.0.9")
bazel_dep(name = "platforms", version = "0.0.8")
# For http_archive deps not yet in BCR (Bazel Central Registry)
# Use module extensions
```

```bash
# Check available versions
