# bash-script-validator

A skill that runs bash and POSIX scripts through syntax checks, ShellCheck and its own security and portability rules. Handy before CI.

## What it does

The skill validates in layers. First `bash -n` or `sh -n` catches syntax, then ShellCheck does static analysis, and custom checks cover security, portability and text-processing issues. The shebang decides which shell is assumed, so the same file can be judged as bash or as POSIX.

Run it from the skill directory: `bash scripts/validate.sh <script-path>`. The ShellCheck provider is set with `VALIDATOR_SHELLCHECK_MODE` — `auto`, `system`, `wrapper` or `disabled`. When the binary is missing, `scripts/shellcheck_wrapper.sh` spins up a cached Python virtual environment. If that cannot run either, only syntax and custom checks remain, and the skill is expected to say so: coverage drops.

Every batch of edits is followed by a rerun until no new errors appear. Exit codes stay simple: `0` clean, `1` warnings, `2` errors. For pipelines there is `scripts/run_ci_checks.sh`, which requires a system `shellcheck` and fails when that stage is skipped. Point it at a read-only file and you get patch suggestions instead of edits.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill bash-script-validator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/bash-script-validator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/bash-script-validator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill bash-script-validator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/bash-script-validator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill bash-script-validator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/bash-script-validator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills bash-script-validator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/bash-script-validator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill bash-script-validator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --path devops-skills-plugin/skills/bash-script-validator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/bash-script-validator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill bash-script-validator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills/tree/HEAD/devops-skills-plugin/skills/bash-script-validator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch a syntax error in a `.sh` file before committing
- clear ShellCheck findings ahead of a CI build
- audit someone else's shell script for unsafe patterns
- port bash-specific code to POSIX
- get a patch for a file you cannot edit

## Example prompts
- validate `scripts/deploy.sh` and list every ShellCheck finding
- make this script POSIX compliant and explain each change
- rerun the validator on `backup.sh` after the fixes

# Bash Script Validator

## Overview

This skill validates Bash and POSIX shell scripts with layered checks:

1. Syntax validation (`bash -n` or `sh -n`)
2. ShellCheck static analysis (system binary or wrapper fallback)
3. Custom security, portability, and optimization checks

Use the default flow below, then branch to fallbacks only when the environment is constrained.

## Trigger Guidance

Use this skill when the request includes script quality, linting, syntax checking, or shell portability work.

### Trigger Phrases

- "Validate this bash script"
- "Lint this `.sh` file"
- "Find security issues in this shell script"
- "Why does this script fail ShellCheck?"
- "Make this script POSIX compliant"
- "Review this shell script before CI"

### Non-Trigger Examples

- General Linux command questions with no script file
- Kubernetes, Terraform, or pipeline validation tasks that do not involve shell scripts
- Pure prose editing tasks

## Deterministic Execution Model

Run commands from this skill directory:

```bash
cd devops-skills-plugin/skills/bash-script-validator
```

### Step 1: Preflight

1. Confirm target path exists and is readable.
2. Confirm `bash` is available.
3. Determine whether fixes can be applied directly (write access) or only suggested (read-only).

### Step 2: Run Baseline Validation (Default Path)

```bash
bash scripts/validate.sh <script-path>
```

For deterministic stage behavior, set the ShellCheck provider explicitly:

```bash
# Modes: auto (default), system, wrapper, disabled
VALIDATOR_SHELLCHECK_MODE=system bash scripts/validate.sh <script-path>
```

Record:

- Detected shell type
- Exit code (`0` clean, `1` warnings, `2` errors)
- All reported issue lines and ShellCheck codes (`SC####`) when present

### Step 3: Load Only Needed References

Progressive disclosure by issue type:

- ShellCheck code explanations: `docs/shellcheck-reference.md`
- General fix patterns and security mistakes: `docs/common-mistakes.md`
- Bash-only behavior: `docs/bash-reference.md`
- POSIX portability or bashism fixes: `docs/shell-reference.md`
- Text-processing optimization issues: `docs/grep-reference.md`, `docs/awk-reference.md`, `docs/sed-reference.md`, `docs/regex-reference.md` (only when directly relevant)

### Step 4: Provide or Apply Fixes

For each issue, include:

1. Exact location from validator output (line number and snippet)
2. Root cause
3. Corrected code
