# base44-troubleshooter

A skill that walks the agent through production failures in Base44 apps using function logs and workflow run history. Useful when an automation stops firing.

## What it does

The skill drives the agent through Base44 CLI diagnostics. It starts with an auth check, `npx base44 whoami`, and points to `npx base44 login` when the token has expired. App context comes from `base44/.app.jsonc` in a linked project or from an explicit `--app-id`.

Which tool to reach for depends on the symptom. When the failure can be triggered, the skill says to open `npx base44 logs --follow` and invoke the function while reading the stream. For complaints like a scheduled job that never ran, function logs are the wrong tool: they show what a function printed, not whether a run was dispatched. That case goes through `npx base44 workflows runs --status failed` and `npx base44 workflows list`, where a `consecutiveFailures` value above zero is a workflow worth a look.

The trap is that logs are not read-after-write. A one-shot fetch lags 20–30 seconds behind the invocation, so an empty result right after triggering a function proves nothing. The skill is blunt about this: when output is empty, the variable to change is time, not a flag. Widening `--limit` or switching `--order` will not surface a line that has not been ingested. A `--function` filter also matches stamped rows only, so on apps still running the legacy per-function deployment it can hide entries — re-run without the filter before concluding there are no logs.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add base44/skills --skill base44-troubleshooter -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/base44-troubleshooter/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/base44-troubleshooter/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add base44/skills --skill base44-troubleshooter -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/base44-troubleshooter/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add base44/skills --skill base44-troubleshooter -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/base44-troubleshooter/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install base44/skills base44-troubleshooter
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/base44-troubleshooter/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add base44/skills --skill base44-troubleshooter -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/base44/skills --path skills/base44-troubleshooter
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/base44-troubleshooter/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add base44/skills --skill base44-troubleshooter -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- pull the stack trace behind a failing backend function
- figure out why a scheduled job did not fire
- line up errors with the timestamp a user reported
- tell an empty result caused by ingestion lag from genuinely missing logs
- spot a workflow with accumulating failures

## Example prompts
- Check the logs for createOrder over the last hour and find the error
- My scheduled job stopped running — look at the workflow runs
- Follow the logs and show me what arrives when sendEmail is invoked

# Troubleshoot Production Issues

## Prerequisites

Verify authentication before fetching logs:

```bash
npx base44 whoami
```

If not authenticated or token expired, instruct user to run `npx base44 login`.

Resolve app context in one of these ways:

```bash
# From a linked local project
cat base44/.app.jsonc
# Or explicitly
npx base44 logs --app-id app_123
```

## Available Commands

| Command | Description | Reference |
|---------|-------------|-----------|
| `base44 logs` | Fetch function logs for this app | [project-logs.md](references/project-logs.md) |
| `base44 workflows runs` | List workflow runs, newest first; failed runs carry the failing task and the underlying error | [workflows-runs.md](../base44-cli/references/workflows-runs.md) |
| `base44 workflows list` | List this app's workflows with status and run summary | [workflows-list.md](../base44-cli/references/workflows-list.md) |

## Logs are not read-after-write

**A single fetch that misses your run proves nothing.** One-shot `base44 logs` reads
an index that lags behind the invocation, so an empty result right after triggering a
function is the expected result, not evidence of a problem.

- **Live debugging: use `--follow`.** Where the realtime stream is available it
  delivers lines in **under a second**. Where it is not, the CLI says so and polls
  instead (`Warning: Realtime logs are not available for this app — falling back to
  polling (lines may lag ~20-30s).`). Either way `--follow` is the right tool — you never
  have to pick.
- **One-shot fetches lag ~20-30s.** That is ingestion time, not a filter problem.
- **When output is empty, the variable to change is TIME, never a flag.** Wait and
  re-run the same command. Widening `--limit`, dropping `--level`, or switching
  `--order` changes nothing about a line that has not been ingested yet, and
  re-rolling flags is how agents talk themselves into a wrong diagnosis.

## Troubleshooting Flow

### 1. Watch it happen — `--follow`
