## What it does

The skill fetches transcripts straight from YouTube's InnerTube API — no API key, no browser. When YouTube returns anti-bot responses, the script retries with alternate client identities and then falls back to `yt-dlp`. Both manual and auto-generated captions work.

There is one script, `scripts/main.ts`, run through `bun` or `npx -y bun`. You can set language priority (`--languages zh,en,ja`), pick `text` or `srt` output, segment by chapters, translate, identify speakers, or list available tracks with `--list`. The first run saves metadata, raw snippets, a sentence-segmented transcript and the thumbnail under `youtube-transcript/`; later runs read the cache, and `--refresh` forces a re-fetch.

Single-quote the URL. zsh treats `?` as a glob wildcard, so an unquoted link fails with "no matches found". The `--speakers` mode needs agent post-processing, and the fallback path needs `yt-dlp` present — without it there is nothing to fall back to. For private videos, `YOUTUBE_TRANSCRIPT_COOKIES_FROM_BROWSER` passes a browser name to `yt-dlp`.

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JimLiu/baoyu-skills --skill baoyu-youtube-transcript -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/baoyu-youtube-transcript/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/baoyu-youtube-transcript/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JimLiu/baoyu-skills --skill baoyu-youtube-transcript -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/baoyu-youtube-transcript/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JimLiu/baoyu-skills --skill baoyu-youtube-transcript -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/baoyu-youtube-transcript/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JimLiu/baoyu-skills --skill baoyu-youtube-transcript -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/JimLiu/baoyu-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/baoyu-youtube-transcript/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- get a YouTube video transcript as markdown
- download subtitles as an SRT file
- save the video thumbnail to disk
- split a long transcript by chapters
- translate captions into another language

## Example prompts
- Get the transcript for 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ' with timestamps
- Export SRT subtitles for this video into a separate folder
- List the available caption tracks, then fetch the English one

# YouTube Transcript

Downloads transcripts (subtitles/captions) from YouTube videos. Works with both manually created and auto-generated transcripts. No API key or browser required — uses YouTube's InnerTube API directly and automatically falls back to `yt-dlp` when YouTube blocks the direct API path.

Fetches video metadata and cover image on first run, caches raw data for fast re-formatting.

## Script Directory

Scripts in `scripts/` subdirectory. `{baseDir}` = this SKILL.md's directory path. Resolve `${BUN_X}` runtime: if `bun` installed → `bun`; if `npx` available → `npx -y bun`; else suggest installing bun. Replace `{baseDir}` and `${BUN_X}` with actual values.

| Script | Purpose |
|--------|---------|
| `scripts/main.ts` | Transcript download CLI |

## Usage

```bash
# Default: markdown with timestamps (English)
${BUN_X} {baseDir}/scripts/main.ts <youtube-url-or-id>
# Specify languages (priority order)
${BUN_X} {baseDir}/scripts/main.ts <url> --languages zh,en,ja
# Without timestamps
${BUN_X} {baseDir}/scripts/main.ts <url> --no-timestamps
# With chapter segmentation
${BUN_X} {baseDir}/scripts/main.ts <url> --chapters
# With speaker identification (requires AI post-processing)
${BUN_X} {baseDir}/scripts/main.ts <url> --speakers
# SRT subtitle file
${BUN_X} {baseDir}/scripts/main.ts <url> --format srt
# Translate transcript
${BUN_X} {baseDir}/scripts/main.ts <url> --translate zh-Hans
# List available transcripts
${BUN_X} {baseDir}/scripts/main.ts <url> --list
# Force re-fetch (ignore cache)
${BUN_X} {baseDir}/scripts/main.ts <url> --refresh
```

## Options

| Option | Description | Default |
