# backend-dev-guidelines

Turns the agent into a senior backend engineer: layered architecture, Zod validation, DI, one config source. Built for Express and Prisma work.

## What it does

The skill kicks in when the agent touches routes, controllers, services, repositories, Express middleware or Prisma access. Its rules are blunt: routes only route, controllers extend `BaseController`, services hold business logic and take dependencies through the constructor, and Prisma stays inside repositories.

Before a feature gets built, the skill asks for a BFRI score: architectural fit plus testability minus business logic complexity, data risk and operational risk. The result lands between `-13` and `+7`. The author is clear that this is a discussion aid, not a validated risk model or a merge gate. Config comes from `unifiedConfig` only, external input goes through Zod, and unexpected errors are captured at one approved boundary.

This is documentation, not a runnable service — there is nothing to start. Your repository's architecture, authorization model and dependency versions take precedence over these patterns. On Express 4 you need `asyncErrorWrapper`; it will not catch detached background work you never returned or awaited.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill backend-dev-guidelines -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/backend-dev-guidelines/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/backend-dev-guidelines/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill backend-dev-guidelines -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/backend-dev-guidelines/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill backend-dev-guidelines -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/backend-dev-guidelines/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills backend-dev-guidelines
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/backend-dev-guidelines/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill backend-dev-guidelines -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --path skills/backend-dev-guidelines
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/backend-dev-guidelines/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill backend-dev-guidelines -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/backend-dev-guidelines/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split an Express app into routes, controllers, services and repositories
- get Prisma queries out of controllers
- score a feature with BFRI before writing code
- cover request bodies and query params with Zod schemas
- move config out of `process.env` into `unifiedConfig`

## Example prompts
- Add a create-order endpoint following backend-dev-guidelines
- Refactor `userController.ts` so Prisma moves into a repository
- Run a BFRI assessment on adding billing to this service

# Backend Development Guidelines

**(Node.js · Express · TypeScript · Microservices)**

You are a **senior backend engineer** operating production-grade services under strict architectural and reliability constraints.

Your goal is to build **predictable, observable, and maintainable backend systems** using:

* Layered architecture
* Explicit error boundaries
* Strong typing and validation
* Centralized configuration
* First-class observability

Use these patterns when they fit the target repository; its architecture, authorization model and dependency versions take precedence. This documentation does not ship a runnable service.

## 1. Backend Feasibility & Risk Index (BFRI)

Before implementing or modifying a backend feature, assess feasibility.

### BFRI Dimensions (1–5)

| Dimension                     | Question                                                         |
| ----------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Architectural Fit** | Does this follow routes → controllers → services → repositories? |
| **Business Logic Complexity** | How complex is the domain logic? |
| **Data Risk** | Does this affect critical data paths or transactions? |
| **Operational Risk** | Does this impact auth, billing, messaging, or infra? |
| **Testability** | Can this be reliably unit + integration tested? |

### Score Formula

```
BFRI = (Architectural Fit + Testability) − (Complexity + Data Risk + Operational Risk)
```

**Range:** `-13 → +7` (each input is 1–5). This is an informal discussion aid, not a validated risk model or merge gate.

### Interpretation

| BFRI     | Meaning   | Action                 |
| -------- | --------- | ---------------------- |
| **6–7**  | Lower concern      | Proceed                |
| **3–5**  | Moderate  | Add tests + monitoring |
| **0–2**  | Risky     | Refactor or isolate    |
| **< 0**  | Dangerous | Redesign before coding |
