## What it does

The skill is split into seven sections: design review checklists, recommendations, design principles, tradeoffs, service guides, workload patterns and assessment questions. The agent locates a section through `read_file` using a line range or a linked reference file such as `security.md`, then pulls the matching Microsoft Learn page.

Network access is required. The preferred route is the `mcp_microsoftdocs` MCP server and its `microsoft_docs_fetch` tool; when that is unavailable the skill falls back to `fetch_webpage`. Without either, only the local quick-reference files remain and the agent cannot reach current Learn pages.

Coverage runs from App Service, AKS, SQL, networking and storage to AI, HPC, SaaS, AVD and AVS workloads. The skill file carries a `metadata.generated_at` note: once that date is more than three months old, the author suggests pulling the latest version from the repository. Worth checking if your copy has been sitting around.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-well-architected -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-well-architected/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-well-architected/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-well-architected -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-well-architected/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-well-architected -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-well-architected/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills azure-well-architected
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-well-architected/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-well-architected -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --path skills/azure-well-architected
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-well-architected/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-well-architected -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/azure-well-architected/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- review an Azure workload against WAF checklists
- weigh cost, reliability and performance tradeoffs
- pick a workload pattern for AI, HPC or SaaS
- assess AVD or AVS maturity with guided questions
- check an App Service, AKS or SQL guide before changes

## Example prompts
- run my AKS architecture through the reliability checklist from Azure Well-Architected
- what are the cost and reliability tradeoffs for a multi-region deployment?
- ask me the assessment questions for a SaaS workload on Azure

# Azure Well Architected Skill

This skill provides expert guidance for designing, assessing, and optimizing Azure workloads using Azure Well Architected. Covers design review checklists, recommendations, design principles, tradeoffs, service guides, workload patterns, and assessment questions. It combines local quick-reference content with remote documentation fetching capabilities.

## How to Use This Skill

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: Use the **Category Index** below to locate relevant sections. For categories with line ranges (e.g., `L35-L120`), use `read_file` with the specified lines. For categories with file links (e.g., `[security.md](security.md)`), use `read_file` on the linked reference file

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: If `metadata.generated_at` is more than 3 months old, suggest the user pull the latest version from the repository. If `mcp_microsoftdocs` tools are not available, suggest the user install it: [Installation Guide](https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/mcp/blob/main/README.md)

This skill requires **network access** to fetch documentation content:
- **Preferred**: Use `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill`. Returns Markdown.
- **Fallback**: Use `fetch_webpage` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill&accept=text/markdown`. Returns Markdown.
