Manages Azure Storage services, access tiers, and blob transfers directly from coding assistants. Useful when provisioning cloud storage or writing SDK code.

## What it does

This skill supplies context and commands for Azure Storage resources. It covers Blob Storage, File Shares, Queue Storage, Table Storage, and Data Lake. The agent can compare access tiers like hot, cool, cold, and archive. It also explains redundancy models ranging from LRS to GZRS.

When Azure MCP is active, the assistant runs direct tools such as `storage_blob_put` and `storage_blob_get`. Without MCP, it falls back to `az storage` commands in the terminal. Do not use this skill for Cosmos DB or Service Bus: those services require `azure-prepare` and `azure-messaging`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-storage -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-storage/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-storage/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-storage/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-storage/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-storage
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-storage/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-storage
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-storage/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-storage/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- choose between hot, cool, cold, and archive storage tiers
- upload and download blobs using Azure MCP or the az CLI
- pick the right redundancy model between LRS, ZRS, and GRS
- set up task queues with Azure Queue Storage

## Example prompts
- List all storage containers in the primary account
- Which access tier fits database backups kept for 180 days?
- Download blob telemetry.csv to local folder using the az CLI

# Azure Storage Services

## Services

| Service | Use When | MCP Tools | CLI |
|---------|----------|-----------|-----|
| Blob Storage | Objects, files, backups, static content | `azure__storage` | `az storage blob` |
| File Shares | SMB file shares, lift-and-shift | - | `az storage file` |
| Queue Storage | Async messaging, task queues | - | `az storage queue` |
| Table Storage | NoSQL key-value (consider Cosmos DB) | - | `az storage table` |
| Data Lake | Big data analytics, hierarchical namespace | - | `az storage fs` |

## MCP Server (Preferred)

When Azure MCP is enabled:

- `azure__storage` with command `storage_account_list` - List storage accounts
- `azure__storage` with command `storage_container_list` - List containers in account
- `azure__storage` with command `storage_blob_list` - List blobs in container
- `azure__storage` with command `storage_blob_get` - Download blob content
- `azure__storage` with command `storage_blob_put` - Upload blob content

**If Azure MCP is not enabled:** In Copilot CLI or Claude Code, ask the user to run `/mcp` and enable Azure MCP; in other hosts, ask the user to enable Azure MCP through the host's MCP configuration.

## CLI Fallback

```bash
# List storage accounts
az storage account list --output table
# List containers
az storage container list --account-name ACCOUNT --output table
# List blobs
az storage blob list --account-name ACCOUNT --container-name CONTAINER --output table
# Download blob
az storage blob download --account-name ACCOUNT --container-name CONTAINER --name BLOB --file LOCAL_PATH
# Upload blob
az storage blob upload --account-name ACCOUNT --container-name CONTAINER --name BLOB --file LOCAL_PATH
```

## Storage Account Tiers

| Tier | Use Case | Performance |
|------|----------|-------------|
| Standard | General purpose, backup | Milliseconds |
| Premium | Databases, high IOPS | Sub-millisecond |

## Blob Access Tiers

| Tier | Access Frequency | Cost |
|------|-----------------|------|
| Hot | Frequent | Higher storage, lower access |
| Cool | Infrequent (30+ days) | Lower storage, higher access |
| Cold | Rare (90+ days) | Lower still |
| Archive | Rarely (180+ days) | Lowest storage, rehydration required |

## Redundancy Options

| Type | Durability | Use Case |
|------|------------|----------|
| LRS | 11 nines | Dev/test, recreatable data |
| ZRS | 12 nines | Regional high availability |
| GRS | 16 nines | Disaster recovery |
| GZRS | 16 nines | Best durability |
