## What it does

The skill covers queue operations with `@azure/storage-queue`: creating a queue, checking its properties, sending messages, and receiving them. It shows the roles of `QueueServiceClient` and `QueueClient`. You can also inspect messages without taking them from the queue, update a message, or remove it after processing.

Authentication examples use Microsoft Entra, a connection string, an account key, or a SAS token. The Microsoft Entra examples also use `@azure/identity`; the documented install command adds both packages with `npm install @azure/storage-queue @azure/identity`. The client needs valid credentials to connect to storage. Message visibility settings and JSON encoded as a string are covered too.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-storage-queue-ts -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-storage-queue-ts/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-storage-queue-ts/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-storage-queue-ts/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-storage-queue-ts/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-storage-queue-ts
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-storage-queue-ts/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-storage-queue-ts
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-storage-queue-ts/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-storage-queue-ts/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create an Azure queue and inspect its properties
- send task messages from TypeScript
- receive messages and remove them after processing
- inspect queued messages without taking them
- extend a message's visibility while processing it

## Example prompts
- Show me how to create an Azure queue with `QueueClient` and send it a JSON task.
- Write a handler that receives queue messages and deletes each one after processing.
- How can I inspect messages without receiving them and change their visibility time?

# @azure/storage-queue (TypeScript/JavaScript)

SDK for Azure Queue Storage operations — send, receive, peek, and manage messages in queues.

## Installation

```bash
npm install @azure/storage-queue @azure/identity
```

**Current Version**: 12.x
**Node.js**: >= 18.0.0

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME=<account-name>
AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_KEY=<account-key>
# OR connection string
AZURE_STORAGE_CONNECTION_STRING=DefaultEndpointsProtocol=https;AccountName=...
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication

### Microsoft Entra Token Credential (Recommended)

```typescript
import { QueueServiceClient } from "@azure/storage-queue";
import { DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential } from "@azure/identity";
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
const credential = new DefaultAzureCredential({requiredEnvVars: ["AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS"]});
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/javascript/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-node-latest#credential-classes
// const credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
const accountName = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME!;
const client = new QueueServiceClient(
  `https://${accountName}.queue.core.windows.net`,
  credential
);
```

### Connection String

```typescript
import { QueueServiceClient } from "@azure/storage-queue";
const client = QueueServiceClient.fromConnectionString(
  process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_CONNECTION_STRING!
);
```

### StorageSharedKeyCredential (Node.js only)

```typescript
import { QueueServiceClient, StorageSharedKeyCredential } from "@azure/storage-queue";
const accountName = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME!;
const accountKey = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_KEY!;
const sharedKeyCredential = new StorageSharedKeyCredential(accountName, accountKey);
const client = new QueueServiceClient(
  `https://${accountName}.queue.core.windows.net`,
  sharedKeyCredential
);
```

### SAS Token

```typescript
import { QueueServiceClient } from "@azure/storage-queue";
const accountName = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME!;
const sasToken = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_SAS_TOKEN!;
const client = new QueueServiceClient(
  `https://${accountName}.queue.core.windows.net${sasToken}`
);
```

## Client Hierarchy

```
QueueServiceClient (account level)
└── QueueClient (queue level)
    └── Messages (send, receive, peek, delete)
```

## Queue Operations

### Create Queue

```typescript
const queueClient = client.getQueueClient("my-queue");
