## What it does

The skill lays out the SDK client hierarchy: `ShareServiceClient` at account level, `ShareClient` for a share, `ShareDirectoryClient` for directories, `ShareFileClient` for files. Your agent gets ready snippets for creating a share with a quota, listing shares by prefix, nested directories, and uploading a string, buffer, stream or local file.

Authentication is covered in four flavours: connection string, `StorageSharedKeyCredential` (Node.js only), a Microsoft Entra token via `DefaultAzureCredential`, and a SAS token. In production with `DefaultAzureCredential` you need `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod`, otherwise the skill points you at a concrete credential such as `ManagedIdentityCredential`. Node.js 18.0.0 or newer is required, plus the `@azure/storage-file-share` and `@azure/identity` packages.

Install with `npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-storage-file-share-ts -a claude-code`; the file lands at `~/.claude/skills/azure-storage-file-share-ts/SKILL.md`. GitHub Copilot users have their own `gh skill install` command. If your project already wraps Azure Files in its own client, expect to rework the snippets — the agent will reach for the template code first.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-storage-file-share-ts -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-storage-file-share-ts/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-storage-file-share-ts/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-storage-file-share-ts/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-storage-file-share-ts/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-storage-file-share-ts
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-storage-file-share-ts/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-storage-file-share-ts
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-storage-file-share-ts/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-storage-file-share-ts/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a file share with a quota in gigabytes
- list directories and files inside a share
- upload a local file to Azure Files
- download a file from a share to disk
- set up auth with DefaultAzureCredential or a SAS token

## Example prompts
- Show me how to create a share named my-share with a 100 GB quota using @azure/storage-file-share
- Write TypeScript that uploads a local file to a share with ShareFileClient
- How do I list files and directories in my-directory and print their sizes?

# @azure/storage-file-share (TypeScript/JavaScript)

SDK for Azure File Share operations — SMB file shares, directories, and file operations.

## Installation

```bash
npm install @azure/storage-file-share @azure/identity
```

**Current Version**: 12.x
**Node.js**: >= 18.0.0

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME=<account-name>
AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_KEY=<account-key>
# OR connection string
AZURE_STORAGE_CONNECTION_STRING=DefaultEndpointsProtocol=https;AccountName=...
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication

### Connection String (Simplest)

```typescript
import { ShareServiceClient } from "@azure/storage-file-share";
const client = ShareServiceClient.fromConnectionString(
  process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_CONNECTION_STRING!
);
```

### StorageSharedKeyCredential (Node.js only)

```typescript
import { ShareServiceClient, StorageSharedKeyCredential } from "@azure/storage-file-share";
const accountName = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME!;
const accountKey = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_KEY!;
const sharedKeyCredential = new StorageSharedKeyCredential(accountName, accountKey);
const client = new ShareServiceClient(
  `https://${accountName}.file.core.windows.net`,
  sharedKeyCredential
);
```

### Microsoft Entra Token Credential

```typescript
import { ShareServiceClient } from "@azure/storage-file-share";
import { DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential } from "@azure/identity";
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
const credential = new DefaultAzureCredential({requiredEnvVars: ["AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS"]});
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/javascript/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-node-latest#credential-classes
// const credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
const accountName = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME!;
const client = new ShareServiceClient(
  `https://${accountName}.file.core.windows.net`,
  credential
);
```

### SAS Token

```typescript
