## What it does

The skill provides reference patterns for the `@azure/storage-blob` package on version 12.x. It enforces the client hierarchy across `BlobServiceClient`, `ContainerClient`, and specific blob clients like `BlockBlobClient`.

It covers multiple authentication methods: Microsoft Entra ID via `@azure/identity`, connection strings, SAS tokens, and shared keys. Implementation patterns include streaming through Node.js readable streams, buffering, local file transfers, and browser uploads.

The SDK requires Node.js 18.0.0 or higher. Running `DefaultAzureCredential` in production expects the `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS` environment variable to be present.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-storage-blob-ts -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-storage-blob-ts/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-storage-blob-ts/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-storage-blob-ts/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-storage-blob-ts/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-storage-blob-ts
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-storage-blob-ts/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-storage-blob-ts
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-storage-blob-ts/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-storage-blob-ts/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- configure Azure Blob Storage authentication using `DefaultAzureCredential`
- upload local files or streams via `BlockBlobClient`
- download blobs directly to buffers or text strings
- create and delete containers with prefix filtering

## Example prompts
- Write a function to stream a file upload to Azure Blob Storage using `@azure/storage-blob`
- Show how to connect to `BlobServiceClient` using `DefaultAzureCredential`
- Download a blob as a string from the `logs` container

# @azure/storage-blob (TypeScript/JavaScript)

SDK for Azure Blob Storage operations — upload, download, list, and manage blobs and containers.

## Installation

```bash
npm install @azure/storage-blob @azure/identity
```

**Current Version**: 12.x
**Node.js**: >= 18.0.0

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME=<account-name>
AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_KEY=<account-key>
# OR connection string
AZURE_STORAGE_CONNECTION_STRING=DefaultEndpointsProtocol=https;AccountName=...
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication

### Microsoft Entra Token Credential (Recommended)

```typescript
import { BlobServiceClient } from "@azure/storage-blob";
import { DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential } from "@azure/identity";
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
const credential = new DefaultAzureCredential({requiredEnvVars: ["AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS"]});
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/javascript/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-node-latest#credential-classes
// const credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
const accountName = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME!;
const client = new BlobServiceClient(
  `https://${accountName}.blob.core.windows.net`,
  credential
);
```

### Connection String

```typescript
import { BlobServiceClient } from "@azure/storage-blob";
const client = BlobServiceClient.fromConnectionString(
  process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_CONNECTION_STRING!
);
```

### StorageSharedKeyCredential (Node.js only)

```typescript
import { BlobServiceClient, StorageSharedKeyCredential } from "@azure/storage-blob";
const accountName = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME!;
const accountKey = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_KEY!;
const sharedKeyCredential = new StorageSharedKeyCredential(accountName, accountKey);
const client = new BlobServiceClient(
  `https://${accountName}.blob.core.windows.net`,
  sharedKeyCredential
);
```

### SAS Token

```typescript
import { BlobServiceClient } from "@azure/storage-blob";
const accountName = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME!;
const sasToken = process.env.AZURE_STORAGE_SAS_TOKEN!; // starts with "?"
const client = new BlobServiceClient(
  `https://${accountName}.blob.core.windows.net${sasToken}`
);
```

## Client Hierarchy

```
BlobServiceClient (account level)
└── ContainerClient (container level)
    └── BlobClient (blob level)
        ├── BlockBlobClient (block blobs - most common)
        ├── AppendBlobClient (append-only blobs)
        └── PageBlobClient (page blobs - VHDs)
```

## Container Operations

### Create Container

```typescript
