## What it does

This skill hands the agent a reference for the `azure-storage-blob` Python package. It covers the client hierarchy — `BlobServiceClient`, `ContainerClient`, `BlobClient` — plus container creation, uploads from a path, bytes or a stream, downloads to disk or memory, prefix listing and `walk_blobs` for virtual directories. Deleting blobs with snapshots and setting metadata or HTTP headers are in there too.

Auth leans on `DefaultAzureCredential` from `azure-identity`: it picks up Azure CLI locally and managed identity in the cloud without code changes. Connection strings and account keys skip Entra audit and rotation, so the samples avoid them. In production the skill suggests setting `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod`, and wrapping each client in a context manager so sockets and token caches close deterministically.

Large transfers get their own section: `max_block_size`, `max_single_put_size` and `max_concurrency` for parallel uploads and downloads. SAS tokens should be issued with a user delegation key signed by Entra ID, never an account key. The caller needs the “Storage Blob Delegator” role on the storage account, otherwise `get_user_delegation_key` fails.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-storage-blob-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-storage-blob-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-storage-blob-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-storage-blob-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-storage-blob-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-storage-blob-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-storage-blob-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-storage-blob-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-storage-blob-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-storage-blob-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- upload a local file to an Azure blob container
- download a blob to disk or read it into memory
- list blobs by prefix and walk virtual directories
- issue a read-only SAS token via a user delegation key
- tune block size and concurrency for large files

## Example prompts
- Write a Python script that uploads `./local-file.txt` to `mycontainer` with `BlobServiceClient`
- Show me how to download `sample.txt` into memory as bytes
- Generate a read SAS token for a blob using a user delegation key

# Azure Blob Storage SDK for Python

Client library for Azure Blob Storage — object storage for unstructured data.

## Installation

```bash
pip install azure-storage-blob azure-identity
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_NAME=<your-storage-account>  # Required for all auth methods
# Or use full URL
AZURE_STORAGE_ACCOUNT_URL=https://<account>.blob.core.windows.net  # Alternative to account name
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

```python
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential
from azure.storage.blob import BlobServiceClient
# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()
account_url = "https://<account>.blob.core.windows.net"
with BlobServiceClient(account_url, credential=credential) as blob_service_client:
    # Use blob_service_client here (see following sections for operations)
    ...
```

## Client Hierarchy

| Client | Purpose | Get From |
|--------|---------|----------|
| `BlobServiceClient` | Account-level operations | Direct instantiation |
