## What it does

This skill equips coding agents with an operational playbook for Azure SQL Database. The index organizes essential topics. It covers CPU spikes, deadlock diagnostics, connection timeouts, DTU versus vCore pricing, and Hyperscale architecture alongside Terraform deployment scripts.

Live documentation fetching is built into the workflow. The skill reads lines from local reference tables and pulls full Microsoft Learn articles via `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` or `fetch_webpage`.

Network access is mandatory for retrieving the underlying guides. Note that this skill explicitly excludes Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on VMs, and Cosmos DB.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure, Terraform

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-sql-database -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-sql-database/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-sql-database/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-sql-database -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-sql-database/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-sql-database -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-sql-database/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills azure-sql-database
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-sql-database/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-sql-database -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --path skills/azure-sql-database
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-sql-database/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-sql-database -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/azure-sql-database/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Compare DTU, vCore, serverless, and Hyperscale tiers for cost efficiency
- Troubleshoot CPU spikes and deadlock issues using dynamic management views
- Configure Microsoft Entra authentication, firewall rules, and TDE encryption
- Automate database deployments via Terraform and GitHub Actions workflows

## Example prompts
- Diagnose high CPU usage and query deadlocks on my Azure SQL Database
- Help me choose between DTU and vCore serverless for an intermittent workload
- Write a Terraform script to deploy an Azure SQL Database with geo-replication

# Azure SQL Database Skill

This skill provides expert guidance for Azure SQL Database. Covers troubleshooting, best practices, decision making, architecture & design patterns, limits & quotas, security, configuration, integrations & coding patterns, and deployment. It combines local quick-reference content with remote documentation fetching capabilities.

## How to Use This Skill

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: Use the **Category Index** below to locate relevant sections. For categories with line ranges (e.g., `L35-L120`), use `read_file` with the specified lines. For categories with file links (e.g., `[security.md](security.md)`), use `read_file` on the linked reference file

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: If `metadata.generated_at` is more than 3 months old, suggest the user pull the latest version from the repository. If `mcp_microsoftdocs` tools are not available, suggest the user install it: [Installation Guide](https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/mcp/blob/main/README.md)

This skill requires **network access** to fetch documentation content:
- **Preferred**: Use `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill`. Returns Markdown.
- **Fallback**: Use `fetch_webpage` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill&accept=text/markdown`. Returns Markdown.

## Category Index
