## What it does

\`azure-servicebus-ts` provides implementation guidance for the Azure Service Bus JavaScript SDK, `@azure/service-bus`. It covers creating senders and receivers, sending single or batched messages, consuming messages through callbacks, and closing clients cleanly. Queue, topic, and subscription workflows are included.

The skill also covers session-based ordering, session state, dead-letter queues, scheduled delivery, deferred messages, and non-destructive peeking. It compares `peekLock` with `receiveAndDelete` and shows `DefaultAzureCredential` and `ManagedIdentityCredential` for authentication.

Install `@azure/service-bus` and `@azure/identity` before using these examples. Without those packages, the Service Bus client will not compile. The skill is available for Claude Code and GitHub Copilot.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-servicebus-ts -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-servicebus-ts/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-servicebus-ts/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-servicebus-ts/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-servicebus-ts/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-servicebus-ts
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-servicebus-ts/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-servicebus-ts
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-servicebus-ts/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-servicebus-ts/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- connect a TypeScript app to Azure Service Bus
- send messages to queues and topics
- consume subscriptions with error callbacks
- preserve message order with sessions
- inspect and process dead-letter messages

## Example prompts
- Set up an Azure Service Bus client for `my-queue` using `@azure/service-bus` and `@azure/identity`.
- Show how to publish an event to `my-topic` and consume it from `my-subscription`.
- Add session state handling for `workflow-123` and process messages from the dead-letter queue.

# Azure Service Bus SDK for TypeScript

Enterprise messaging with queues, topics, and subscriptions.

## Installation

```bash
npm install @azure/service-bus @azure/identity
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
SERVICEBUS_NAMESPACE=<namespace>.servicebus.windows.net
SERVICEBUS_QUEUE_NAME=my-queue
SERVICEBUS_TOPIC_NAME=my-topic
SERVICEBUS_SUBSCRIPTION_NAME=my-subscription
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication

```typescript
import { ServiceBusClient } from "@azure/service-bus";
import { DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential } from "@azure/identity";
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
const credential = new DefaultAzureCredential({requiredEnvVars: ["AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS"]});
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/javascript/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-node-latest#credential-classes
// const credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
const fullyQualifiedNamespace = process.env.SERVICEBUS_NAMESPACE!;
const client = new ServiceBusClient(fullyQualifiedNamespace, credential);
```

## Core Workflow

### Send Messages to Queue

```typescript
const sender = client.createSender("my-queue");
// Single message
await sender.sendMessages({
  body: { orderId: "12345", amount: 99.99 },
  contentType: "application/json",
});
// Batch messages
const batch = await sender.createMessageBatch();
batch.tryAddMessage({ body: "Message 1" });
batch.tryAddMessage({ body: "Message 2" });
await sender.sendMessages(batch);
await sender.close();
```

### Receive Messages from Queue

```typescript
const receiver = client.createReceiver("my-queue");
// Receive batch
const messages = await receiver.receiveMessages(10, { maxWaitTimeInMs: 5000 });
for (const message of messages) {
  console.log(`Received: ${message.body}`);
  await receiver.completeMessage(message);
}
await receiver.close();
```

### Subscribe to Messages (Event-Driven)

```typescript
const receiver = client.createReceiver("my-queue");
const subscription = receiver.subscribe({
  processMessage: async (message) => {
    console.log(`Processing: ${message.body}`);
    // Message auto-completed on success
  },
  processError: async (args) => {
    console.error(`Error: ${args.error}`);
  },
});
// Stop after some time
setTimeout(async () => {
  await subscription.close();
  await receiver.close();
}, 60000);
```

### Topics and Subscriptions

```typescript
// Send to topic
const topicSender = client.createSender("my-topic");
await topicSender.sendMessages({
  body: { event: "order.created", data: { orderId: "123" } },
  applicationProperties: { eventType: "order.created" },
});
// Receive from subscription
