## What it does

The skill covers `Azure.Messaging.ServiceBus` client setup, sending messages, receiving them, and settling them after processing. Its examples include queues, topics and subscriptions, batch sends, and sessions for ordered message handling.

For background work, it shows a `ServiceBusProcessor` with message and error handlers. You can complete a message, release it for another attempt, defer it, or move it to a dead-letter subqueue and inspect its metadata. The connection examples use Microsoft Entra credentials or a connection string; package setup uses `dotnet add package Azure.Messaging.ServiceBus`. In production, `DefaultAzureCredential` requires `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` to be set.

The examples cover common messaging workflows, but the topics-and-subscriptions section ends before its code example is complete. To install the skill in Claude Code, run `npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-servicebus-dotnet -a claude-code`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-servicebus-dotnet -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-servicebus-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-servicebus-dotnet/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-servicebus-dotnet/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-servicebus-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-servicebus-dotnet
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-servicebus-dotnet/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-servicebus-dotnet
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-servicebus-dotnet/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-servicebus-dotnet/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- send a message to a .NET queue or topic
- receive messages and settle them after processing
- set up background queue processing
- move an invalid message to a dead-letter subqueue
- process messages in session order

## Example prompts
- Set up Azure Service Bus queue publishing with `ServiceBusSender`.
- Add background queue handling with `ServiceBusProcessor` and error handlers.
- Show how to read a dead-letter message and inspect why it was moved.

# Azure.Messaging.ServiceBus (.NET)

Enterprise messaging SDK for reliable message delivery with queues, topics, subscriptions, and sessions.

## Installation

```bash
dotnet add package Azure.Messaging.ServiceBus
dotnet add package Azure.Identity
```

**Current Version**: v7.20.1 (stable)

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_SERVICEBUS_FULLY_QUALIFIED_NAMESPACE=<namespace>.servicebus.windows.net  # Required: Service Bus fully qualified namespace
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
AZURE_SERVICEBUS_CONNECTION_STRING=Endpoint=sb://...  # Alternative to Entra ID auth
```

## Authentication

### Microsoft Entra Token Credential

```csharp
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.Messaging.ServiceBus;
string fullyQualifiedNamespace = "<namespace>.servicebus.windows.net";
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
var credential = new DefaultAzureCredential(
    DefaultAzureCredential.DefaultEnvironmentVariableName
);
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-dotnet#credential-classes
// var credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
await using ServiceBusClient client = new(fullyQualifiedNamespace, credential);
```

### Connection String

```csharp
string connectionString = "<connection_string>";
await using ServiceBusClient client = new(connectionString);
```

### ASP.NET Core Dependency Injection

```csharp
services.AddAzureClients(builder =>
{
    builder.AddServiceBusClientWithNamespace("<namespace>.servicebus.windows.net");
    builder.UseCredential(new DefaultAzureCredential());
});
```

## Client Hierarchy

```
ServiceBusClient
├── CreateSender(queueOrTopicName)      → ServiceBusSender
├── CreateReceiver(queueName)           → ServiceBusReceiver
├── CreateReceiver(topicName, subName)  → ServiceBusReceiver
├── AcceptNextSessionAsync(queueName)   → ServiceBusSessionReceiver
├── CreateProcessor(queueName)          → ServiceBusProcessor
└── CreateSessionProcessor(queueName)   → ServiceBusSessionProcessor
ServiceBusAdministrationClient (separate client for CRUD)
```

## Core Workflows

### 1. Send Messages

```csharp
await using ServiceBusClient client = new(fullyQualifiedNamespace, new DefaultAzureCredential());
ServiceBusSender sender = client.CreateSender("my-queue");
// Single message
ServiceBusMessage message = new("Hello world!");
