## What it does

This skill routes an agent to Azure Security guidance for design choices, configuration, integrations, coding patterns, and deployment. Its scope includes IaaS and PaaS hardening, access control, encryption, backups, secret handling, Azure SQL, networks, and ransomware resilience.

It combines a local category index with fetched documentation. The agent uses `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` for remote material, with `fetch_webpage` as a fallback. Network access is required for those remote references, so check the agent environment before relying on current documentation.

The material also covers antimalware, CMK encryption, firewall rules, auditing, TLS changes, AKS image validation, and signed container SBOMs. Azure Defender For Cloud, Azure Information Protection, Azure DDoS Protection, and Azure Web Application Firewall have separate skills.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-security -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-security/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-security/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-security -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-security/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-security -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-security/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills azure-security
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-security/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-security -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --path skills/azure-security
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-security/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-security -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/azure-security/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- harden AKS clusters and virtual machines
- choose an Azure key management service
- configure CMK encryption and auditing
- sign and verify container images
- prepare ransomware protection measures

## Example prompts
- Use the `azure-security` skill to review hardening options for Azure virtual machines.
- With `azure-security`, help me plan CMK encryption for this Azure workload.
- Use `azure-security` to check image signature validation for AKS.

# Azure Security Skill

This skill provides expert guidance for Azure Security. Covers best practices, decision making, security, configuration, integrations & coding patterns, and deployment. It combines local quick-reference content with remote documentation fetching capabilities.

## How to Use This Skill

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: Use the **Category Index** below to locate relevant sections. For categories with line ranges (e.g., `L35-L120`), use `read_file` with the specified lines. For categories with file links (e.g., `[security.md](security.md)`), use `read_file` on the linked reference file

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: If `metadata.generated_at` is more than 3 months old, suggest the user pull the latest version from the repository. If `mcp_microsoftdocs` tools are not available, suggest the user install it: [Installation Guide](https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/mcp/blob/main/README.md)

This skill requires **network access** to fetch documentation content:
- **Preferred**: Use `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill`. Returns Markdown.
- **Fallback**: Use `fetch_webpage` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill&accept=text/markdown`. Returns Markdown.

## Category Index

| Category | Lines | Description |
|----------|-------|-------------|
| Best Practices | L34-L58 | End-to-end Azure security guidance: hardening IaaS/PaaS, identity and access, network and operational security, backups and ransomware resilience, secrets management, and service-specific checklists. |
| Decision Making | L59-L64 | Guidance on choosing Azure security options: comparing feature availability in US Gov clouds and selecting the appropriate key management service (e.g., Key Vault, managed keys). |
| Security | L65-L97 | Security best practices for Azure: threat modeling mitigations, platform and network hardening, access control, encryption/keys, infrastructure integrity, and secure AKS/VM/SQL operations. |
