## What it does

The skill covers the Azure Key Vault Secrets Java SDK with the Maven artifact `com.azure:azure-security-keyvault-secrets`, version `4.9.0`. It shows how to build sync and async clients with `SecretClientBuilder`, set the vault URL, and provide a `TokenCredential`.

An agent can use it to handle passwords, API keys, connection strings, and other sensitive configuration. The documented operations include creating and reading secrets, selecting versions, inspecting properties, applying tags and expiry settings, listing secrets, and managing deleted entries. Backup and restore flows are included as well.

The authentication example uses `DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder` with `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS`, and also shows `ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder` for a direct production credential. Updating properties does not change a secret value; a new value requires a new secret version.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-security-keyvault-secrets-java -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-security-keyvault-secrets-java/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-security-keyvault-secrets-java/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-security-keyvault-secrets-java/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-security-keyvault-secrets-java/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-security-keyvault-secrets-java
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-security-keyvault-secrets-java/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-security-keyvault-secrets-java
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-security-keyvault-secrets-java/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-security-keyvault-secrets-java/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add the Azure Key Vault Secrets Java SDK with Maven
- build a Key Vault client with token credentials
- store and retrieve a password or API key
- change secret metadata and inspect versions
- delete, recover, or back up a secret

## Example prompts
- Add `com.azure:azure-security-keyvault-secrets` and show Java client code for `https://<vault-name>.vault.azure.net`.
- Store a database password in Azure Key Vault, read its latest version, and print its properties without exposing the value.
- Show how to delete `old-secret`, recover it, and save a backup of all its versions.

# Azure Key Vault Secrets (Java)

Securely store and manage secrets like passwords, API keys, and connection strings.

## Installation

```xml
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
    <artifactId>azure-security-keyvault-secrets</artifactId>
    <version>4.9.0</version>
</dependency>
```

## Client Creation

```java
import com.azure.core.credential.TokenCredential;
import com.azure.identity.AzureIdentityEnvVars;
import com.azure.identity.DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.identity.ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.security.keyvault.secrets.SecretClient;
import com.azure.security.keyvault.secrets.SecretClientBuilder;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
TokenCredential credential = new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder()
    .requireEnvVars(AzureIdentityEnvVars.AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS)
    .build();
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/java/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-java-stable#credential-classes
// TokenCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder().build();
// Sync client
SecretClient secretClient = new SecretClientBuilder()
    .vaultUrl("https://<vault-name>.vault.azure.net")
    .credential(credential)
    .buildClient();
// Async client
SecretAsyncClient secretAsyncClient = new SecretClientBuilder()
    .vaultUrl("https://<vault-name>.vault.azure.net")
    .credential(credential)
    .buildAsyncClient();
```

## Create/Set Secret

```java
import com.azure.security.keyvault.secrets.models.KeyVaultSecret;
// Simple secret
KeyVaultSecret secret = secretClient.setSecret("database-password", "P@ssw0rd123!");
System.out.println("Secret name: " + secret.getName());
System.out.println("Secret ID: " + secret.getId());
// Secret with options
KeyVaultSecret secretWithOptions = secretClient.setSecret(
    new KeyVaultSecret("api-key", "sk_live_abc123xyz")
        .setProperties(new SecretProperties()
            .setContentType("application/json")
            .setExpiresOn(OffsetDateTime.now().plusYears(1))
            .setNotBefore(OffsetDateTime.now())
            .setEnabled(true)
            .setTags(Map.of(
                "environment", "production",
                "service", "payment-api"
            ))
        )
);
```

## Get Secret

```java
// Get latest version
KeyVaultSecret secret = secretClient.getSecret("database-password");
String value = secret.getValue();
