## What it does

This skill covers the Java SDK `com.azure:azure-security-keyvault-keys` and shows the agent how to handle keys in Azure Key Vault and Managed HSM. The examples are Java: building `KeyClient` and `CryptographyClient`, generating RSA keys at 2048, 3072 or 4096 bits, EC keys on P-256, P-384 and P-521 curves, and symmetric OCT keys for Managed HSM. Encrypt/decrypt, sign/verify and key wrap each get their own section.

There is also material on fetching a key by name or version, updating properties, paging through keys and versions, soft-delete, recovery and purge. That gives the agent working call patterns instead of guesses about the API.

Local development examples use `DefaultAzureCredential`; production leans on `ManagedIdentityCredential` or the `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS` variable. Vault access and working authentication are prerequisites — the client will not build without them. The dependency comes in through Maven, version 4.9.0 in the sample.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-security-keyvault-keys-java -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-security-keyvault-keys-java/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-security-keyvault-keys-java/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-security-keyvault-keys-java/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-security-keyvault-keys-java/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-security-keyvault-keys-java
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-security-keyvault-keys-java/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-security-keyvault-keys-java
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-security-keyvault-keys-java/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-security-keyvault-keys-java/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create an RSA key in Azure Key Vault from Java
- encrypt data with a vault-held key
- sign and verify with CryptographyClient
- move a key to HSM protection
- delete a key so it can still be recovered

## Example prompts
- Create a 2048-bit RSA key in Key Vault using KeyClient
- Set up CryptographyClient for RSA_OAEP encryption
- Show me how to list every version of the key `my-key`

# Azure Key Vault Keys (Java)

Manage cryptographic keys and perform cryptographic operations in Azure Key Vault and Managed HSM.

## Installation

```xml
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
    <artifactId>azure-security-keyvault-keys</artifactId>
    <version>4.9.0</version>
</dependency>
```

## Client Creation

```java
import com.azure.core.credential.TokenCredential;
import com.azure.identity.AzureIdentityEnvVars;
import com.azure.identity.DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.identity.ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.security.keyvault.keys.KeyClient;
import com.azure.security.keyvault.keys.KeyClientBuilder;
import com.azure.security.keyvault.keys.cryptography.CryptographyClient;
import com.azure.security.keyvault.keys.cryptography.CryptographyClientBuilder;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
TokenCredential credential = new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder()
    .requireEnvVars(AzureIdentityEnvVars.AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS)
    .build();
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/java/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-java-stable#credential-classes
// TokenCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder().build();
// Key management client
KeyClient keyClient = new KeyClientBuilder()
    .vaultUrl("https://<vault-name>.vault.azure.net")
    .credential(credential)
    .buildClient();
// Async client
KeyAsyncClient keyAsyncClient = new KeyClientBuilder()
    .vaultUrl("https://<vault-name>.vault.azure.net")
    .credential(credential)
    .buildAsyncClient();
// Cryptography client (for encrypt/decrypt/sign/verify)
CryptographyClient cryptoClient = new CryptographyClientBuilder()
    .keyIdentifier("https://<vault-name>.vault.azure.net/keys/<key-name>/<key-version>")
    .credential(credential)
    .buildClient();
```

## Key Types

| Type | Description |
|------|-------------|
| `RSA` | RSA key (2048, 3072, 4096 bits) |
| `RSA_HSM` | RSA key in HSM |
| `EC` | Elliptic Curve key |
| `EC_HSM` | Elliptic Curve key in HSM |
| `OCT` | Symmetric key (Managed HSM only) |
| `OCT_HSM` | Symmetric key in HSM |

## Create Keys

### Create RSA Key

```java
import com.azure.security.keyvault.keys.models.*;
// Simple RSA key
KeyVaultKey rsaKey = keyClient.createRsaKey(new CreateRsaKeyOptions("my-rsa-key")
    .setKeySize(2048));
System.out.println("Key name: " + rsaKey.getName());
System.out.println("Key ID: " + rsaKey.getId());
System.out.println("Key type: " + rsaKey.getKeyType());
// RSA key with options
