## What it does

This skill supplies practical coding patterns for the official `Azure.Search.Documents` .NET package across stable v11.7.0 and preview v11.8.0-beta.1. It directs agents to the appropriate client: `SearchClient` handles queries and document operations, `SearchIndexClient` configures indexes, and `SearchIndexerClient` manages data sources.

Schemas can be declared manually or generated with `FieldBuilder` using attributes such as `[SimpleField]` and `[VectorSearchField]`. Query examples cover standard filtering, faceted navigation, autocomplete, and vector queries via `VectorizedQuery` with HNSW algorithm profiles.

Authentication depends on `Azure.Identity` or an API key via `AzureKeyCredential`. The setup requires `SEARCH_ENDPOINT` and `SEARCH_INDEX_NAME` in the environment. Production Entra token credentials demand `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod`. Missing endpoints cause runtime connection failures.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-search-documents-dotnet -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-search-documents-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-search-documents-dotnet/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-search-documents-dotnet/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-search-documents-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-search-documents-dotnet
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-search-documents-dotnet/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-search-documents-dotnet
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-search-documents-dotnet/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-search-documents-dotnet/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- configure `SearchClient` with Entra ID or API key authentication
- define search index schemas using `FieldBuilder` and C# model attributes
- run batch document operations with `IndexDocumentsBatch`
- implement faceted search, autocomplete, and vector queries

## Example prompts
- Set up vector search using `SearchClient` in C# for our hotel model.
- Create an Azure AI Search index using `FieldBuilder` and HNSW configuration.
- Show an example of batch document updates using `IndexDocumentsBatch`.

# Azure.Search.Documents (.NET)

Build search applications with full-text, vector, semantic, and hybrid search capabilities.

## Installation

```bash
dotnet add package Azure.Search.Documents
dotnet add package Azure.Identity
```

**Current Versions**: Stable v11.7.0, Preview v11.8.0-beta.1

## Environment Variables

```bash
SEARCH_ENDPOINT=https://<search-service>.search.windows.net  # Required: search service endpoint
SEARCH_INDEX_NAME=<index-name>  # Required: search index name
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
SEARCH_API_KEY=<api-key>  # Only required for AzureKeyCredential auth
```

## Authentication

**Microsoft Entra Token Credential**:
```csharp
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.Search.Documents;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
var credential = new DefaultAzureCredential(
    DefaultAzureCredential.DefaultEnvironmentVariableName
);
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-dotnet#credential-classes
// var credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
var client = new SearchClient(
    new Uri(Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("SEARCH_ENDPOINT")),
    Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("SEARCH_INDEX_NAME"),
    credential);
```

**API Key**:
```csharp
using Azure;
using Azure.Search.Documents;
var credential = new AzureKeyCredential(
    Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("SEARCH_API_KEY"));
var client = new SearchClient(
    new Uri(Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("SEARCH_ENDPOINT")),
    Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("SEARCH_INDEX_NAME"),
    credential);
```

## Client Selection

| Client | Purpose |
|--------|---------|
| `SearchClient` | Query indexes, upload/update/delete documents |
| `SearchIndexClient` | Create/manage indexes, synonym maps |
| `SearchIndexerClient` | Manage indexers, skillsets, data sources |

## Index Creation

### Using FieldBuilder (Recommended)

```csharp
using Azure.Search.Documents.Indexes;
using Azure.Search.Documents.Indexes.Models;
// Define model with attributes
public class Hotel
{
    [SimpleField(IsKey = true, IsFilterable = true)]
    public string HotelId { get; set; }
    [SearchableField(IsSortable = true)]
    public string HotelName { get; set; }
