## What it does

This skill covers Azure SQL management through ARM: creating and listing servers and databases, setting up elastic pools, and configuring firewall rules. Its examples use `ArmClient` alongside types from `Azure.ResourceManager.Sql`. Resources follow a hierarchy from the subscription and resource group down to a server and its databases.

This is for the management plane, not for running SQL queries. Use `Microsoft.Data.SqlClient` for queries and stored procedures; this skill does not replace a database client. The .NET project needs the `Azure.ResourceManager.Sql` and `Azure.Identity` packages. The examples read the subscription from `AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID` and use `DefaultAzureCredential` for authentication.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-resource-manager-sql-dotnet -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-resource-manager-sql-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-resource-manager-sql-dotnet/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-resource-manager-sql-dotnet/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-resource-manager-sql-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-resource-manager-sql-dotnet
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-resource-manager-sql-dotnet/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-resource-manager-sql-dotnet
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-resource-manager-sql-dotnet/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- provision an Azure SQL server through ARM
- create a database with a chosen SKU
- place a database in an elastic pool
- set firewall rules for an IP range
- list SQL servers and databases

## Example prompts
- Create an Azure SQL server in `my-resource-group` through Azure Resource Manager.
- Provision `my-database` on the server with SKU `S0`.
- Add a firewall rule for the specified IP range.

# Azure.ResourceManager.Sql (.NET)

Management plane SDK for provisioning and managing Azure SQL resources via Azure Resource Manager.

> **⚠️ Management vs Data Plane**
> - **This SDK (Azure.ResourceManager.Sql)**: Create servers, databases, elastic pools, configure firewall rules, manage failover groups
> - **Data Plane SDK (Microsoft.Data.SqlClient)**: Execute queries, stored procedures, manage connections

## Installation

```bash
dotnet add package Azure.ResourceManager.Sql
dotnet add package Azure.Identity
```

**Current Versions**: Stable v1.3.0, Preview v1.4.0-beta.3

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID=<your-subscription-id>  # Required: Azure subscription ID
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
AZURE_TENANT_ID=<tenant-id>  # For service principal auth (optional)
AZURE_CLIENT_ID=<client-id>  # For service principal auth (optional)
AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET=<client-secret>  # For service principal auth (optional)
```

## Authentication

```csharp
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.ResourceManager;
using Azure.ResourceManager.Sql;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
var credential = new DefaultAzureCredential(
    DefaultAzureCredential.DefaultEnvironmentVariableName
);
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-dotnet#credential-classes
// var credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
var armClient = new ArmClient(credential);
// Get subscription
var subscriptionId = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID");
var subscription = armClient.GetSubscriptionResource(
    new ResourceIdentifier($"/subscriptions/{subscriptionId}"));
```

## Resource Hierarchy

```
ArmClient
└── SubscriptionResource
    └── ResourceGroupResource
        └── SqlServerResource
            ├── SqlDatabaseResource
            ├── ElasticPoolResource
            │   └── ElasticPoolDatabaseResource
            ├── SqlFirewallRuleResource
            ├── FailoverGroupResource
            ├── ServerBlobAuditingPolicyResource
            ├── EncryptionProtectorResource
            └── VirtualNetworkRuleResource
```

## Core Workflow

### 1. Create SQL Server

```csharp
using Azure.ResourceManager.Sql;
using Azure.ResourceManager.Sql.Models;
// Get resource group
var resourceGroup = await subscription
