## What it does

The skill covers Azure Cosmos DB management-plane work with `Azure.ResourceManager.CosmosDB`. It helps create or update accounts, SQL databases, and containers, set manual or autoscale throughput, and retrieve account keys or connection strings. The resource model runs from `ArmClient` through subscriptions and resource groups to Cosmos DB resources.

Install `Azure.ResourceManager.CosmosDB` and `Azure.Identity`, then provide `AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID`. The authentication examples use `DefaultAzureCredential`, with `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` for a production setup. This skill does not handle document CRUD or queries; those belong to `Microsoft.Azure.Cosmos`. That boundary matters when an agent chooses the SDK for a task.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-resource-manager-cosmosdb-dotnet -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-resource-manager-cosmosdb-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-resource-manager-cosmosdb-dotnet/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-resource-manager-cosmosdb-dotnet/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-resource-manager-cosmosdb-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-resource-manager-cosmosdb-dotnet
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-resource-manager-cosmosdb-dotnet/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-resource-manager-cosmosdb-dotnet
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-resource-manager-cosmosdb-dotnet/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- provision an Azure Cosmos DB account through ARM
- create a SQL database and container
- configure manual or autoscale throughput
- retrieve Cosmos DB keys and connection strings
- manage Cosmos DB resources from .NET

## Example prompts
- Provision an Azure Cosmos DB account and a SQL container through Azure Resource Manager in .NET.
- Set manual throughput for this Cosmos DB database and write the required code.
- Explain whether this task needs `Azure.ResourceManager.CosmosDB` or `Microsoft.Azure.Cosmos` for document CRUD.

# Azure.ResourceManager.CosmosDB (.NET)

Management plane SDK for provisioning and managing Azure Cosmos DB resources via Azure Resource Manager.

> **⚠️ Management vs Data Plane**
> - **This SDK (Azure.ResourceManager.CosmosDB)**: Create accounts, databases, containers, configure throughput, manage RBAC
> - **Data Plane SDK (Microsoft.Azure.Cosmos)**: CRUD operations on documents, queries, stored procedures execution

## Installation

```bash
dotnet add package Azure.ResourceManager.CosmosDB
dotnet add package Azure.Identity
```

**Current Versions**: Stable v1.4.0, Preview v1.4.0-beta.13

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID=<your-subscription-id> # Required: Azure subscription ID
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
AZURE_TENANT_ID=<tenant-id> # For service principal auth (optional)
AZURE_CLIENT_ID=<client-id> # For service principal auth (optional)
AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET=<client-secret> # For service principal auth (optional)
```

## Authentication

```csharp
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.ResourceManager;
using Azure.ResourceManager.CosmosDB;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
var credential = new DefaultAzureCredential(
    DefaultAzureCredential.DefaultEnvironmentVariableName
);
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-dotnet#credential-classes
// var credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
var armClient = new ArmClient(credential);
// Get subscription
var subscriptionId = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID");
var subscription = armClient.GetSubscriptionResource(
    new ResourceIdentifier($"/subscriptions/{subscriptionId}"));
```
