## What it does

This skill supplies code templates for connecting Node.js applications to Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server via the `pg` package. It covers both single `Client` connections and managed connection pooling with `Pool`.

Authentication handles two distinct paths. You can supply standard credentials or retrieve an access token through `@azure/identity` for passwordless Microsoft Entra ID access. Azure strictly requires `ssl: { rejectUnauthorized: true }`.

The patterns also cover parameterized queries, typed query results, and a `withTransaction` wrapper that manages commit and rollback logic. Using these recipes requires `pg`, `@azure/identity`, and `@types/pg`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure, PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-postgres-ts -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-postgres-ts/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-postgres-ts/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-postgres-ts/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-postgres-ts/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-postgres-ts
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-postgres-ts/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-postgres-ts
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-postgres-ts/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-postgres-ts/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- connect a Node.js service to Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server
- authenticate with passwordless Microsoft Entra ID tokens
- configure a resilient connection pool using pg Pool
- execute multi-step queries safely inside PostgreSQL transactions

## Example prompts
- Set up an Azure PostgreSQL connection pool in TypeScript using Entra ID authentication
- Write a parameterized query in pg that filters records by an array of IDs
- Create a transaction helper in Node.js to handle BEGIN, COMMIT, and ROLLBACK automatically

# Azure PostgreSQL for TypeScript (node-postgres)

Connect to Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server using the `pg` (node-postgres) package with support for password and Microsoft Entra ID (passwordless) authentication.

## Installation

```bash
npm install pg @azure/identity
npm install -D @types/pg
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
# Required
AZURE_POSTGRESQL_HOST=<server>.postgres.database.azure.com
AZURE_POSTGRESQL_DATABASE=<database>
AZURE_POSTGRESQL_PORT=5432
# For password authentication
AZURE_POSTGRESQL_USER=<username>
AZURE_POSTGRESQL_PASSWORD=<password>
# For Entra ID authentication
AZURE_POSTGRESQL_USER=<entra-user>@<server>   # e.g., user@contoso.com
AZURE_POSTGRESQL_CLIENTID=<managed-identity-client-id>  # For user-assigned identity
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication

### Option 1: Password Authentication

```typescript
import { Client, Pool } from "pg";
const client = new Client({
  host: process.env.AZURE_POSTGRESQL_HOST,
  database: process.env.AZURE_POSTGRESQL_DATABASE,
  user: process.env.AZURE_POSTGRESQL_USER,
  password: process.env.AZURE_POSTGRESQL_PASSWORD,
  port: Number(process.env.AZURE_POSTGRESQL_PORT) || 5432,
  ssl: { rejectUnauthorized: true }  // Required for Azure
});
await client.connect();
```

### Option 2: Microsoft Entra ID (Passwordless) - Recommended

```typescript
import { Client, Pool } from "pg";
import { DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential } from "@azure/identity";
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
const credential = new DefaultAzureCredential({requiredEnvVars: ["AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS"]});
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/javascript/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-node-latest#credential-classes
// const credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
// For user-assigned managed identity
// const credential = new DefaultAzureCredential({
//   managedIdentityClientId: process.env.AZURE_POSTGRESQL_CLIENTID
// });
// Acquire access token for Azure PostgreSQL
const tokenResponse = await credential.getToken(
  "https://ossrdbms-aad.database.windows.net/.default"
);
const client = new Client({
  host: process.env.AZURE_POSTGRESQL_HOST,
  database: process.env.AZURE_POSTGRESQL_DATABASE,
  user: process.env.AZURE_POSTGRESQL_USER,  // Entra ID user
  password: tokenResponse.token,             // Token as password
  port: Number(process.env.AZURE_POSTGRESQL_PORT) || 5432,
  ssl: { rejectUnauthorized: true }
});
await client.connect();
```

## Core Workflows

### 1. Single Client Connection

```typescript
import { Client } from "pg";
const client = new Client({
