## What it does

The skill hands your agent a reference on Azure Pipelines: troubleshooting, best practices, agent selection, limits and quotas, security, configuration, integrations and deployment. Inside is a category index with line ranges and links to separate files such as `security.md`. The agent reads just the section it needs with `read_file` instead of pulling the whole document.

Fresh details come from the network. The preferred route is `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` with `from=learn-agent-skill`; the fallback is `fetch_webpage` with `accept=text/markdown`. If the `mcp_microsoftdocs` server is missing, the skill points you to its installation guide in the MicrosoftDocs repo. Without network access only the local part works.

Scope is Pipelines only. The description names separate skills for Azure DevOps, Boards, Repos and Test Plans, so bring this one when the task is actually about pipelines. One more thing: the metadata carries a generation date, and once it is older than three months the skill suggests pulling the latest version from the repository. Worth checking whether the limits and tasks it describes still match the service.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure, Azure DevOps, Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-pipelines -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-pipelines/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-pipelines/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-pipelines -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-pipelines/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-pipelines -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-pipelines/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills azure-pipelines
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-pipelines/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-pipelines -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --path skills/azure-pipelines
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-pipelines/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-pipelines -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/azure-pipelines/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find out why a pipeline never starts or dies halfway
- write a YAML template and reuse it across pipelines
- set up an Azure Resource Manager service connection
- move secrets into Key Vault instead of YAML variables
- speed up builds by caching dependencies

## Example prompts
- Why doesn't my pipeline trigger on a push to main?
- Help me convert a classic release to YAML and extract the steps into a template
- How do I wire Key Vault into the pipeline without leaking secrets into logs

# Azure Pipelines Skill

This skill provides expert guidance for Azure Pipelines. Covers troubleshooting, best practices, decision making, architecture & design patterns, limits & quotas, security, configuration, integrations & coding patterns, and deployment. It combines local quick-reference content with remote documentation fetching capabilities.

## How to Use This Skill

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: Use the **Category Index** below to locate relevant sections. For categories with line ranges (e.g., `L35-L120`), use `read_file` with the specified lines. For categories with file links (e.g., `[security.md](security.md)`), use `read_file` on the linked reference file

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: If `metadata.generated_at` is more than 3 months old, suggest the user pull the latest version from the repository. If `mcp_microsoftdocs` tools are not available, suggest the user install it: [Installation Guide](https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/mcp/blob/main/README.md)

This skill requires **network access** to fetch documentation content:
- **Preferred**: Use `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill`. Returns Markdown.
- **Fallback**: Use `fetch_webpage` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill&accept=text/markdown`. Returns Markdown.
