# azure-pipelines-validator

Runs local scripts over azure-pipelines.yml to catch syntax errors, security issues and best-practice gaps. Useful before you merge a pipeline change.

## What it does

The skill shells out to a bash script that parses Azure DevOps YAML and returns findings in three buckets: syntax, security, best practices. Every finding carries a severity — Blocking, Warning, Info — and a rule ID such as `hardcoded-secret` or `task-version-zero`, plus a short fix.

Modes cover the usual cases: a full pass, `--syntax-only`, `--best-practices`, `--security-only`, and `--strict`, where warnings fail the run. Exit codes stay simple: 0 passes, 1 means blocking issues, 2 means a bad invocation. Paths come from the repo root via `git rev-parse --show-toplevel`. If that comes back empty the script stops and asks for the root instead of guessing.

You need `bash` and `python3` on the machine. When `yamllint` is missing the run continues and the report notes the skipped lint. No Python runtime means scripted validation is blocked and only a manual YAML review is left. Generating pipelines from scratch is out of scope here — that is what `azure-pipelines-generator` is for.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill azure-pipelines-validator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-pipelines-validator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-pipelines-validator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill azure-pipelines-validator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-pipelines-validator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill azure-pipelines-validator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-pipelines-validator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills azure-pipelines-validator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-pipelines-validator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill azure-pipelines-validator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --path devops-skills-plugin/skills/azure-pipelines-validator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-pipelines-validator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill azure-pipelines-validator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills/tree/HEAD/devops-skills-plugin/skills/azure-pipelines-validator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- lint `azure-pipelines.yml` before merging
- find hardcoded passwords and secrets in a pipeline
- catch YAML syntax errors before the build runs
- run a security scan on a pipeline in CI
- check task versions, caching and displayName against best practices

## Example prompts
- Validate my `azure-pipelines.yml` for syntax and security
- Run a security scan on this Azure DevOps pipeline
- Why is this YAML failing? Run the validator in strict mode

# Azure Pipelines Validator

Use this skill to validate Azure DevOps pipeline YAML (`azure-pipelines.yml` / `azure-pipelines.yaml`) with local scripts first, then escalate to docs only when local output is not enough.

## Trigger Phrases

Use this skill when the user asks things like:

- "Validate my `azure-pipelines.yml`."
- "Why is this Azure pipeline YAML failing?"
- "Run a security scan on this Azure DevOps pipeline."
- "Check this pipeline for best-practice issues."
- "Review this pipeline in CI before merge."

Do not use this skill for pipeline generation from scratch. Use `azure-pipelines-generator` for that.

## Deterministic Path Setup (No Ambiguity)

Run from any directory using explicit absolute paths:

```bash
REPO_ROOT="$(git rev-parse --show-toplevel 2>/dev/null)"
SKILL_DIR="$REPO_ROOT/devops-skills-plugin/skills/azure-pipelines-validator"
PIPELINE_FILE="$REPO_ROOT/azure-pipelines.yml"
```

If `REPO_ROOT` is empty, stop and ask for the repository root path. Do not guess paths.

Validate one file:

```bash
bash "$SKILL_DIR/scripts/validate_azure_pipelines.sh" "$PIPELINE_FILE"
```

Auto-detect from current directory (up to depth 3):

```bash
bash "$SKILL_DIR/scripts/validate_azure_pipelines.sh"
```

If auto-detect returns multiple files, rerun with one explicit file path.

## Local-First Execution Model

1. Preflight
- Confirm `bash` and `python3` are available.
- Confirm target file exists.

2. Run local validator
- Default full pass:
```bash
bash "$SKILL_DIR/scripts/validate_azure_pipelines.sh" "$PIPELINE_FILE"
```
- Syntax only:
```bash
bash "$SKILL_DIR/scripts/validate_azure_pipelines.sh" "$PIPELINE_FILE" --syntax-only
```
- Best practices only:
```bash
bash "$SKILL_DIR/scripts/validate_azure_pipelines.sh" "$PIPELINE_FILE" --best-practices
```
- Security only:
```bash
bash "$SKILL_DIR/scripts/validate_azure_pipelines.sh" "$PIPELINE_FILE" --security-only
```
- Strict mode (warnings fail):
```bash
bash "$SKILL_DIR/scripts/validate_azure_pipelines.sh" "$PIPELINE_FILE" --strict
```

3. Interpret exit behavior
- `0`: pass (or non-blocking checks only)
- `1`: validation failed (blocking issues)
- `2`: invalid invocation (missing/ambiguous file or bad args)

4. Return findings in the report format below.
