## What it does

This skill provides code patterns for the Azure Monitor Query Java SDK. It guides setup for `LogsQueryClient` and `MetricsQueryClient`, covering synchronous and asynchronous builders alongside `DefaultAzureCredential` authentication.

Microsoft marked `com.azure:azure-monitor-query` as deprecated in favor of `azure-monitor-query-logs` and `azure-monitor-query-metrics`. Because of this status, the skill is targeted at maintaining existing applications rather than starting greenfield work.

Log queries require a `LOG_ANALYTICS_WORKSPACE_ID`, while metric lookups require an `AZURE_RESOURCE_ID`. Without a valid `TokenCredential` possessing proper Azure RBAC permissions, API calls will fail.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-monitor-query-java -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-monitor-query-java/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-monitor-query-java/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-monitor-query-java/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-monitor-query-java/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-monitor-query-java
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-monitor-query-java/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-monitor-query-java
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-monitor-query-java/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- execute KQL queries against Log Analytics workspaces in Java
- query Azure resource time-series metrics asynchronously
- map Kusto query tabular output into custom Java model objects
- configure client endpoints for Azure China sovereign cloud

## Example prompts
- Write Java code to query Log Analytics using LogsQueryClient and DefaultAzureCredential
- Show how to map an AzureActivity KQL query result to a custom Java class
- How do I configure MetricsQueryAsyncClient for Azure China Cloud?

Client library for querying Azure Monitor Logs and Metrics.

## Installation

```xml
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
    <artifactId>azure-monitor-query</artifactId>
    <version>1.5.9</version>
</dependency>
```

Or use Azure SDK BOM:

```xml
<dependencyManagement>
    <dependencies>
        <dependency>
            <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
            <artifactId>azure-sdk-bom</artifactId>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
        <artifactId>azure-monitor-query</artifactId>
    </dependency>
</dependencies>
```

## Prerequisites

- Log Analytics workspace (for logs queries)
- Azure resource (for metrics queries)
- TokenCredential with appropriate permissions

## Environment Variables

```bash
LOG_ANALYTICS_WORKSPACE_ID=xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx  # Required for Log Analytics workspace queries
AZURE_RESOURCE_ID=/subscriptions/{sub}/resourceGroups/{rg}/providers/{provider}/{resource}  # Required for metrics queries against a resource
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Client Creation

### LogsQueryClient (Sync)

```java
import com.azure.core.credential.TokenCredential;
import com.azure.identity.AzureIdentityEnvVars;
import com.azure.identity.DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.identity.ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.monitor.query.LogsQueryClient;
import com.azure.monitor.query.LogsQueryClientBuilder;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
TokenCredential credential = new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder()
    .requireEnvVars(AzureIdentityEnvVars.AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS)
    .build();
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/java/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-java-stable#credential-classes
// TokenCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder().build();
LogsQueryClient logsClient = new LogsQueryClientBuilder()
    .credential(credential)
