## What it does

The skill covers the `AzureMonitorTraceExporter`, `AzureMonitorMetricExporter` and `AzureMonitorLogExporter` classes from the `azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter` package. It ships code samples: wiring an exporter into `TracerProvider`, `MeterProvider` and `LoggerProvider`, reading the connection string from the environment, and authenticating with `DefaultAzureCredential`.

Install the package with `pip install azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter`. You need `APPLICATIONINSIGHTS_CONNECTION_STRING` set — it points at the target Application Insights resource. When `DefaultAzureCredential` runs in production, set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` so the credential chain stays limited to production-safe options.

Telemetry providers are not context managers. The skill tells you to flush and shut them down explicitly at process exit, otherwise buffered data never leaves. There are samples for sampling with `ApplicationInsightsSampler`, for offline storage with retry, and for turning that storage off. For quick setup with auto-instrumentation the authors point to the `azure-monitor-opentelemetry` distro; this package is for a hand-built pipeline and fine-grained control.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- send OpenTelemetry traces to Application Insights
- authenticate the exporter with Microsoft Entra ID
- push Python app metrics into Azure Monitor
- attach logs to an OpenTelemetry provider via `LoggingHandler`
- keep offline storage so failed exports are retried

## Example prompts
- Show me how to wire `AzureMonitorTraceExporter` into `TracerProvider` with `DefaultAzureCredential`
- Set up `AzureMonitorMetricExporter` with a 60000 ms export interval
- How do I turn on offline storage for the trace exporter?

# Azure Monitor OpenTelemetry Exporter for Python

Low-level exporter for sending OpenTelemetry traces, metrics, and logs to Application Insights.

## Installation

```bash
pip install azure-monitor-opentelemetry-exporter
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
APPLICATIONINSIGHTS_CONNECTION_STRING=InstrumentationKey=xxx;IngestionEndpoint=https://xxx.in.applicationinsights.azure.com/  # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential` for ingestion auth when supported.** `APPLICATIONINSIGHTS_CONNECTION_STRING` identifies the target Application Insights resource, and `credential=DefaultAzureCredential(...)` provides Microsoft Entra authentication.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Providers are not context managers.** Flush and shut down telemetry providers explicitly at process exit so buffers are exported deterministically.
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

## When to Use

## Trace Exporter

```python
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential
from opentelemetry import trace
from opentelemetry.sdk.trace import TracerProvider
from opentelemetry.sdk.trace.export import BatchSpanProcessor
from azure.monitor.opentelemetry.exporter import AzureMonitorTraceExporter
# Reads APPLICATIONINSIGHTS_CONNECTION_STRING from env to identify the resource;
# DefaultAzureCredential authenticates ingestion via Microsoft Entra ID.
exporter = AzureMonitorTraceExporter(
