## What it does

The skill covers `FabricMgmtClient` operations for creating capacities, retrieving details, listing resources by group or subscription, and changing SKUs or tags. Its examples also show how to suspend, resume, or delete a capacity, check whether a name is available, and list SKUs.

The examples use `azure-mgmt-fabric` and `azure-identity`. Set `AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID` and `AZURE_RESOURCE_GROUP` before running them. Authentication uses `DefaultAzureCredential`; production setups set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod`. The guidance also calls for context managers to close clients and, in async code, credentials. A suspended capacity is not billed, so suspension stops billing while it is paused.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure, Power BI

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-mgmt-fabric-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-mgmt-fabric-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-mgmt-fabric-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-mgmt-fabric-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-mgmt-fabric-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-mgmt-fabric-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-mgmt-fabric-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-mgmt-fabric-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-mgmt-fabric-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-mgmt-fabric-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a Microsoft Fabric capacity with a chosen SKU
- retrieve a capacity’s state and properties
- list capacities in a resource group or subscription
- change a capacity’s SKU and tags
- suspend or resume a capacity

## Example prompts
- Write Python code to create a Microsoft Fabric capacity in the group set by `AZURE_RESOURCE_GROUP`.
- Show how to read a capacity’s SKU and state through `FabricMgmtClient`.
- Add code that suspends a capacity to stop billing.

# Azure Fabric Management SDK for Python

Manage Microsoft Fabric capacities and resources programmatically.

## Installation

```bash
pip install azure-mgmt-fabric
pip install azure-identity
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID=<your-subscription-id>  # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_RESOURCE_GROUP=<your-resource-group>  # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

```python
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential
from azure.mgmt.fabric import FabricMgmtClient
import os
# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()
with FabricMgmtClient(
    credential=credential,
    subscription_id=os.environ["AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID"]
) as client:
    # Use `client` for all subsequent operations (see examples below)
    ...
```

## Create Fabric Capacity

```python
from azure.mgmt.fabric import FabricMgmtClient
from azure.mgmt.fabric.models import FabricCapacity, FabricCapacityProperties, CapacitySku
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential
import os
resource_group = os.environ["AZURE_RESOURCE_GROUP"]
capacity_name = "myfabriccapacity"
credential = DefaultAzureCredential()
with FabricMgmtClient(
    credential=credential,
    subscription_id=os.environ["AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID"]
) as client:
    capacity = client.fabric_capacities.begin_create_or_update(
        resource_group_name=resource_group,
        capacity_name=capacity_name,
        resource=FabricCapacity(
            location="eastus",
            sku=CapacitySku(
                name="F2",  # Fabric SKU
                tier="Fabric"
            ),
````
