## What it does

This skill instructs the agent on using `azure-mgmt-apimanagement`. It generates Python code to provision APIM services and import OpenAPI specs. Examples also cover configuring backends and storing secrets with `NamedValueCreateContract`.

Authentication relies on `DefaultAzureCredential` from `azure-identity`. Calls will fail without `AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID` in the environment. The skill requires wrapping every client in a Python context manager to release network sockets. In production, `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` restricts credentials to safe methods.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-mgmt-apimanagement-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-mgmt-apimanagement-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- provision an Azure API Management instance using Python
- import OpenAPI schemas from raw JSON or URLs
- apply rate-limit XML policies to API endpoints
- generate subscription keys for API products

## Example prompts
- Write a Python script to import an OpenAPI definition into APIM.
- Configure a rate-limiting XML policy on my Azure API Management endpoint.
- Show how to create an APIM product and issue a subscription key.

# Azure API Management SDK for Python

Manage Azure API Management services, APIs, products, and policies.

## Installation

```bash
pip install azure-mgmt-apimanagement
pip install azure-identity
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID=your-subscription-id  # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

```python
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential
from azure.mgmt.apimanagement import ApiManagementClient
import os
with ApiManagementClient(
    credential=DefaultAzureCredential(),
    subscription_id=os.environ["AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID"]
) as client:
    # Use `client` for all subsequent operations (see examples below)
    ...
```

## Create APIM Service

```python
from azure.mgmt.apimanagement.models import (
    ApiManagementServiceResource,
    ApiManagementServiceSkuProperties,
    SkuType
)
service = client.api_management_service.begin_create_or_update(
    resource_group_name="my-resource-group",
    service_name="my-apim",
    parameters=ApiManagementServiceResource(
        location="eastus",
        publisher_email="admin@example.com",
        publisher_name="My Organization",
        sku=ApiManagementServiceSkuProperties(
            name=SkuType.DEVELOPER,
            capacity=1
        )
    )
).result()
print(f"Created APIM: {service.name}")
```

## Import API from OpenAPI

```python
from azure.mgmt.apimanagement.models import (
    ApiCreateOrUpdateParameter,
    ContentFormat,
    Protocol
)
api = client.api.begin_create_or_update(
    resource_group_name="my-resource-group",
    service_name="my-apim",
    api_id="my-api",
    parameters=ApiCreateOrUpdateParameter(
        display_name="My API",
        path="myapi",
        protocols=[Protocol.HTTPS],
        format=ContentFormat.OPENAPI_JSON,
        value='{"openapi": "3.0.0", "info": {"title": "My API", "version": "1.0"}, "paths": {"/health": {"get": {"responses": {"200": {"description": "OK"}}}}}}'
    )
).result()
print(f"Imported API: {api.display_name}")
```

## Import API from URL

```python
````
