## What it does

The skill teaches an agent to work with the `Azure.ResourceManager.ApiManagement` package, the SDK for provisioning and managing Azure API Management through Azure Resource Manager. It covers services, APIs, products, subscriptions, policies, users, groups, gateways and backends. This is management plane only: direct calls to gateway endpoints are data plane and not included.

Inside is a resource hierarchy from `ArmClient` down to `ApiManagementServiceResource` and its children: `ApiResource`, `ApiManagementProductResource`, `ApiManagementSubscriptionResource` and more. The skill walks through typical scenarios: create a service, add an API, set up a product, issue a subscription, apply an XML policy, run a backup. Each scenario comes as working C# code.

You need `AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID` and Azure credentials. `DefaultAzureCredential` works locally; production auth uses a service principal with `AZURE_TENANT_ID`, `AZURE_CLIENT_ID` and `AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET`. Creating a service is a long-running operation and can take over 30 minutes.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-mgmt-apimanagement-dotnet -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-dotnet/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-dotnet/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-mgmt-apimanagement-dotnet
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-dotnet/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-dotnet
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-dotnet/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-mgmt-apimanagement-dotnet/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create an APIM service from C# code
- add an API and attach it to a product
- issue a subscription and read its keys
- apply rate-limit and header rules through XML policy
- back up an APIM service to a storage account

## Example prompts
- Create an APIM service named `my-apim-service` in EastUS with the Developer SKU
- Add an API with path `myapi` pointing to `https://backend.contoso.com/api`
- Set up a Starter product, issue a subscription for it, and print the primary key

# Azure.ResourceManager.ApiManagement (.NET)

Management plane SDK for provisioning and managing Azure API Management resources via Azure Resource Manager.

> **⚠️ Management vs Data Plane**
> - **This SDK (Azure.ResourceManager.ApiManagement)**: Create services, APIs, products, subscriptions, policies, users, groups
> - **Data Plane**: Direct API calls to your APIM gateway endpoints

## Installation

```bash
dotnet add package Azure.ResourceManager.ApiManagement
dotnet add package Azure.Identity
```

**Current Version**: v1.3.0

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID=<your-subscription-id> # Required: Azure subscription ID
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
AZURE_TENANT_ID=<tenant-id> # For service principal auth (optional)
AZURE_CLIENT_ID=<client-id> # For service principal auth (optional)
AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET=<client-secret> # For service principal auth (optional)
```

## Authentication

```csharp
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.ResourceManager;
using Azure.ResourceManager.ApiManagement;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
var credential = new DefaultAzureCredential(
    DefaultAzureCredential.DefaultEnvironmentVariableName
);
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-dotnet#credential-classes
// var credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
var armClient = new ArmClient(credential);
// Get subscription
var subscriptionId = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID");
var subscription = armClient.GetSubscriptionResource(
    new ResourceIdentifier($"/subscriptions/{subscriptionId}"));
```

## Resource Hierarchy
