## What it does

This skill feeds the agent working Python examples for Azure Web PubSub Service. The server side runs on `WebPubSubServiceClient`: minting a client access token, sending a message to everyone, to one user, to a group or to a single connection. Group and connection calls are covered too — add a user, check whether a connection is alive, close it.

The client side uses `WebPubSubClient` from `azure-messaging-webpubsubclient`, with handlers for `connected`, `server-message` and `group-message`. For async code the skill points at `azure.messaging.webpubsubservice.aio`, which pairs with `DefaultAzureCredential` from `azure.identity.aio`.

One thing to set up first: the `AZURE_WEBPUBSUB_HUB` variable, required for every auth method. In production with `DefaultAzureCredential` the skill advises `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod`, otherwise the credential chain may pick up something you did not intend. And do not mix sync `azure.xxx` clients with async `azure.xxx.aio` clients in the same call path — pick one mode per module.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-messaging-webpubsubservice-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsubservice-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsubservice-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsubservice-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsubservice-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-messaging-webpubsubservice-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsubservice-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsubservice-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsubservice-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsubservice-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- issue a client access token for a WebSocket connection
- broadcast a notification to every connection in a hub
- send a message to a specific user or group
- add and remove a user from a group
- check whether a connection exists and close it

## Example prompts
- Write server-side Python that issues a client access token for user123 with the webpubsub.sendToGroup role
- Broadcast a JSON message to all clients in the hub using WebPubSubServiceClient
- Show the async version: send to a group with the aio client and DefaultAzureCredential

# Azure Web PubSub Service SDK for Python

Real-time messaging with WebSocket connections at scale.

## Installation

```bash
# Service SDK (server-side)
pip install azure-messaging-webpubsubservice
# Client SDK (for Python WebSocket clients)
pip install azure-messaging-webpubsubclient
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_WEBPUBSUB_HUB=my-hub  # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

## Service Client (Server-Side)

### Authentication

```python
from azure.messaging.webpubsubservice import WebPubSubServiceClient
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential
# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()
with WebPubSubServiceClient(
    endpoint="https://<name>.webpubsub.azure.com",
    hub="my-hub",
    credential=credential
) as client:
    # Use `client` for all subsequent operations (see examples below)
    ...
```

### Generate Client Access Token

```python
# Token for anonymous user
token = client.get_client_access_token()
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the d16a98cfff3c5932 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
