## What it does

This skill supplies code patterns for the `com.azure:azure-messaging-webpubsub` Java package (`1.5.0`). It shows the coding assistant how to set up `WebPubSubServiceClient` and its asynchronous counterpart using connection strings, access keys, or `DefaultAzureCredential`.

It covers routine real-time tasks: broadcasting plain text or JSON payloads, targeting groups or user IDs, and closing expired connections. In addition, it outlines generating `WebPubSubClientAccessToken` instances with scoped roles and custom expiration times.

Client initialization fails without a provisioned Azure Web PubSub resource and proper environment credentials.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-messaging-webpubsub-java -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsub-java/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsub-java/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsub-java/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsub-java/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-messaging-webpubsub-java
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsub-java/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsub-java
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsub-java/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-messaging-webpubsub-java/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Send JSON and text messages to WebSocket groups or specific user IDs
- Generate scoped client access tokens with custom expiration and role assignments
- Configure sync and async Azure Web PubSub clients using connection strings or Azure Identity
- Filter message broadcasts by user identifiers or group combinations

## Example prompts
- Show me how to initialize WebPubSubServiceClient in Java using DefaultAzureCredential.
- Generate Java code to broadcast a JSON payload to all connections in a specific group.
- How do I issue a client access token with webpubsub.sendToGroup permissions in Java?

# Azure Web PubSub SDK for Java

Build real-time web applications using the Azure Web PubSub SDK for Java.

## Installation

```xml
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
    <artifactId>azure-messaging-webpubsub</artifactId>
    <version>1.5.0</version>
</dependency>
```

## Client Creation

### With Connection String

```java
import com.azure.messaging.webpubsub.WebPubSubServiceClient;
import com.azure.messaging.webpubsub.WebPubSubServiceClientBuilder;
WebPubSubServiceClient client = new WebPubSubServiceClientBuilder()
    .connectionString("<connection-string>")
    .hub("chat")
    .buildClient();
```

### With Access Key

```java
import com.azure.core.credential.AzureKeyCredential;
WebPubSubServiceClient client = new WebPubSubServiceClientBuilder()
    .credential(new AzureKeyCredential("<access-key>"))
    .endpoint("<endpoint>")
    .hub("chat")
    .buildClient();
```

### With DefaultAzureCredential

```java
import com.azure.core.credential.TokenCredential;
import com.azure.identity.AzureIdentityEnvVars;
import com.azure.identity.DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.identity.ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
TokenCredential credential = new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder()
    .requireEnvVars(AzureIdentityEnvVars.AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS)
    .build();
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/java/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-java-stable#credential-classes
// TokenCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder().build();
WebPubSubServiceClient client = new WebPubSubServiceClientBuilder()
    .credential(credential)
    .endpoint("<endpoint>")
    .hub("chat")
    .buildClient();
```

### Async Client

```java
import com.azure.messaging.webpubsub.WebPubSubServiceAsyncClient;
WebPubSubServiceAsyncClient asyncClient = new WebPubSubServiceClientBuilder()
    .connectionString("<connection-string>")
    .hub("chat")
    .buildAsyncClient();
```

## Key Concepts

- **Hub**: Logical isolation unit for connections
- **Group**: Subset of connections within a hub
- **Connection**: Individual WebSocket client connection
- **User**: Entity that can have multiple connections

## Core Patterns

### Send to All Connections

```java
import com.azure.messaging.webpubsub.models.WebPubSubContentType;
// Send text message
client.sendToAll("Hello everyone!", WebPubSubContentType.TEXT_PLAIN);
// Send JSON
String jsonMessage = "{\"type\": \"notification\", \"message\": \"New update!\"}";
client.sendToAll(jsonMessage, WebPubSubContentType.APPLICATION_JSON);
```

### Send to All with Filter

```java
import com.azure.core.http.rest.RequestOptions;
