## What it does

The skill covers Azure Maps clients for .NET. `MapsSearchClient` can turn addresses into coordinates or look up addresses from coordinates. The SDK also includes clients for routing, map rendering, IP geolocation, and weather data.

The guide gives NuGet install commands and shows authentication with a subscription key, Microsoft Entra credentials, or a SAS token. The Entra example requires `AZURE_MAPS_CLIENT_ID`; the demonstrated credential setup uses `Azure.Identity`. SDK package commands include `--prerelease`, so those packages are in prerelease versions.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-maps-search-dotnet -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-maps-search-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-maps-search-dotnet/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-maps-search-dotnet/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-maps-search-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-maps-search-dotnet
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-maps-search-dotnet/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-maps-search-dotnet
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-maps-search-dotnet/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-maps-search-dotnet/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- convert a street address into coordinates
- look up an address from coordinates
- request route directions or a route matrix
- fetch map tiles or a static map image
- get a country or region from an IP address

## Example prompts
- Show me how to get coordinates for an address with `MapsSearchClient` in my .NET app.
- Add reverse geocoding so the app can find an address from coordinates.
- Explain how to request route directions with the Azure Maps SDK for .NET.

# Weather
dotnet add package Azure.Maps.Weather --prerelease

# Resource Management (account management, SAS tokens)
dotnet add package Azure.ResourceManager.Maps --prerelease

# Required for authentication
dotnet add package Azure.Identity
```
**Current Versions**:
- `Azure.Maps.Search`: v2.0.0-beta.5
- `Azure.Maps.Routing`: v1.0.0-beta.4
- `Azure.Maps.Rendering`: v2.0.0-beta.1
- `Azure.Maps.Geolocation`: v1.0.0-beta.3
## Environment Variables
```bash
AZURE_MAPS_SUBSCRIPTION_KEY=<your-subscription-key> # Only required for AzureKeyCredential auth
AZURE_MAPS_CLIENT_ID=<your-client-id> # Required: Azure Maps client ID
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```
## Authentication
### Subscription Key (Shared Key)
```csharp
using Azure;
using Azure.Maps.Search;

var subscriptionKey = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("AZURE_MAPS_SUBSCRIPTION_KEY");
var credential = new AzureKeyCredential(subscriptionKey);

var client = new MapsSearchClient(credential);
```
### Microsoft Entra Token Credential
```csharp
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.Maps.Search;

// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
var credential = new DefaultAzureCredential(
    DefaultAzureCredential.DefaultEnvironmentVariableName
);
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-dotnet#credential-classes
// var credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
var clientId = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("AZURE_MAPS_CLIENT_ID");

var client = new MapsSearchClient(credential, clientId);
```
### Shared Access Signature (SAS)
```csharp
using Azure;
using Azure.Core;
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.ResourceManager;
using Azure.ResourceManager.Maps;
using Azure.ResourceManager.Maps.Models;
using Azure.Maps.Search;

// Authenticate with Azure Resource Manager
ArmClient armClient = new ArmClient(new DefaultAzureCredential());

// Get Maps account resource
ResourceIdentifier mapsAccountResourceId = MapsAccountResource.CreateResourceIdentifier(
    subscriptionId, resourceGroupName, accountName);
MapsAccountResource mapsAccount = armClient.GetMapsAccountResource(mapsAccountResourceId);

// Generate SAS token
