## What it does

The skill walks through rack scale Azure Local, from planning to failure triage. It ships five workflows: plan-and-deploy, workload-management, networking, operate-and-monitor, plus references for CLI setup, a docs map and safety rules. Control plane work goes through `Microsoft.NetworkCloud`, `Microsoft.ManagedNetworkFabric` and `Microsoft.AzureStackHCI`, with commands in the `az networkcloud`, `az networkfabric` and `az stack-hci-vm` extensions.

Four racks is the floor: one aggregation rack plus three or more compute racks. Multi-rack is in preview, so the skill tells you to confirm availability in the docs before locking a design. Missing CLI extensions stop the commands cold, so install them first per `references/cli-and-prereqs.md`.

It is not for standard Azure Local at 1–16 nodes, and not for rack-aware clusters built from two racks. Those share task names with multi-rack — logical networks, VM creation, NSGs — but the procedures are separate and not interchangeable. The skill starts read-only and asks before fabric changes, isolation domain edits, VM power or delete operations, or anything touching the aggregation rack or SAN.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add microsoft/skills
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install azure-local-skills@skills
```
This installs the whole azure-local-skills plugin with all its skills

2. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-local-multi-rack -a claude-code
```

3. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-local-multi-rack/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-local-multi-rack/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-local-multi-rack/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-local-multi-rack/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-local-multi-rack
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-local-multi-rack/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-local-skills/skills/azure-local-multi-rack
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-local-multi-rack/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-local-skills/skills/azure-local-multi-rack/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- plan an Azure Local deployment across four or more racks
- deploy aggregation and compute racks with `az networkcloud`
- set up isolation domains, load balancers and NSGs in managed network fabric
- triage fabric and SAN failures from metrics and the serial console
- tell multi-rack apart from standard Azure Local before running the wrong procedure

## Example prompts
- Check whether our setup is multi-rack Azure Local and lay out a deployment plan
- Configure an isolation domain and a load balancer in the network fabric
- Pull metrics and the serial console — why did a compute rack go down

# Azure Local Multi-Rack

> Multi-rack is in **preview** — say so, and confirm availability from the docs before committing to a design.

## Quick Reference

| Property | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Best for | Rack-scale Azure Local: 100+ machines, preintegrated racks, SAN, managed fabric |
| Scale | Minimum four racks — one aggregation rack plus three or more compute racks |
| Providers | `Microsoft.NetworkCloud`, `Microsoft.ManagedNetworkFabric`, `Microsoft.AzureStackHCI` |
| CLI | `az networkcloud`, `az networkfabric`, `az stack-hci-vm` |
| Related skill | `azure-local` for standard 1-16 node and rack-aware deployments |

## When to Use This Skill

Use when the deployment is multi-rack / rack scale: preintegrated racks, an aggregation rack, a Network Fabric Controller, a Cluster Manager, SAN storage, or the `networkcloud` / `managednetworkfabric` CLI extensions.

Do **not** use for standard Azure Local (1-16 node hyperconverged, up to 64 disaggregated) or rack-aware clusters — hand off to the `azure-local` skill. If the scale is unclear, ask first: the two have separate, non-interchangeable procedures for the same-sounding tasks (logical networks, VM creation, NSGs).

## MCP Tools

No dedicated MCP namespace. Use generic Azure MCP tools: `mcp_azure_mcp_extension_cli_generate` (confirm `networkcloud`/`networkfabric` extensions first), `mcp_azure_mcp_monitor` (needs Log Analytics), `mcp_azure_mcp_resourcehealth` (partial; not fabric or SAN health), `mcp_azure_mcp_documentation` (multi-rack articles only — standard Azure Local pages do not apply).

Details: [cli-and-prereqs](references/cli-and-prereqs.md).
