## What it does

The skill detects project frameworks, resolves base container images, and crafts Dockerfiles alongside Kubernetes manifests. It includes profiles for Spring Boot, Express, Next.js, FastAPI, Django, NestJS, ASP.NET Core, Go, and Flask. Workload Identity setups and GitHub Actions workflow templates come bundled as well.

Before launching workloads, it verifies configuration against AKS Deployment Safeguards checklist items DS001 through DS013. When automated checks fail or a release breaks, recovery instructions help roll back changes.

This skill requires an active AKS cluster, configured `kubectl`, and an authenticated `az login` session. It cannot build infrastructure from scratch. Cluster provisioning belongs to the separate `azure-kubernetes` skill.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure, Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-kubernetes-app-deploy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-kubernetes-app-deploy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-kubernetes-app-deploy/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-kubernetes-app-deploy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-kubernetes-app-deploy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-kubernetes-app-deploy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-kubernetes-app-deploy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-kubernetes/azure-kubernetes-app-deploy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-kubernetes-app-deploy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-kubernetes/azure-kubernetes-app-deploy/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- containerize backend APIs and web applications with generated Dockerfiles
- build Kubernetes manifests matching framework networking and health checks
- pass AKS Deployment Safeguards validation across rules DS001 to DS013
- configure Workload Identity and automated delivery via GitHub Actions

## Example prompts
- Generate a Dockerfile and Kubernetes manifests to run this Django app on AKS
- Inspect our deployment manifests against AKS Deployment Safeguards DS001-DS013
- Configure GitHub Actions workflows to deploy this service to our existing AKS cluster

Detects the framework, generates a Dockerfile and Kubernetes manifests, validates against AKS Deployment Safeguards, and deploys with verification. WHEN: deploy app to AKS, deploy to existing AKS cluster, containerize app for Kubernetes, generate K8s manifests for Azure, set up CI/CD for AKS, my AKS deployment is failing safeguard checks, I have a Django/Express/Spring Boot app to run on AKS. # Deploy to AKS

**Use when:** deploying a web app/API to AKS; containerizing for Kubernetes; generating manifests; AKS CI/CD; DS001–DS013 failures.

**Not for:** provisioning clusters (`azure-kubernetes`), AKS Automatic readiness (`azure-kubernetes-automatic-readiness`), non-AKS targets.

## Workflow

Requires: existing AKS cluster, `az login`, `kubectl` configured. Follow `phases/quick-deploy.md`. On failure: `references/rollback.md`.
