## What it does

The skill equips the assistant with code patterns for `azure-keyvault-secrets` and `azure-keyvault-keys`. It guides the model to use `SecretClient` alongside `KeyClient` with the official `azure-identity` library.

Every client pattern enforces deterministic resource cleanup. The model wraps connections inside `with` or `async with` context managers. This releases sockets and token caches properly.

Running this code requires setting `AZURE_KEYVAULT_URL`. In production environments, omitting `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` leaves the credential chain open to dev-level fallbacks.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-keyvault-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-keyvault-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-keyvault-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-keyvault-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-keyvault-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-keyvault-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-keyvault-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-keyvault-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-keyvault-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-keyvault-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- retrieve and set secrets via SecretClient
- create RSA or EC keys and encrypt data
- generate self-signed certificates with default policy
- configure DefaultAzureCredential authentication chains

## Example prompts
- Write Python code to fetch a database password from Azure Key Vault
- Show how to encrypt plaintext using CryptographyClient and RSA
- Generate a script to create a self-signed certificate in Key Vault

# Azure Key Vault SDK for Python

Secure storage and management for secrets, cryptographic keys, and certificates.

## Installation

```bash
# Secrets
pip install azure-keyvault-secrets azure-identity
# Keys (cryptographic operations)
pip install azure-keyvault-keys azure-identity
# Certificates
pip install azure-keyvault-certificates azure-identity
# All
pip install azure-keyvault-secrets azure-keyvault-keys azure-keyvault-certificates azure-identity
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_KEYVAULT_URL=https://<vault-name>.vault.azure.net/  # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

## Secrets

### SecretClient Setup

```python
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential
from azure.keyvault.secrets import SecretClient
# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()
vault_url = "https://<vault-name>.vault.azure.net/"
with SecretClient(vault_url=vault_url, credential=credential) as client:
    # All secret operations go inside this block (see examples below)
    ...
```

### Secret Operations

```python
# Set secret
secret = client.set_secret("database-password", "super-secret-value")
print(f"Created: {secret.name}, version: {secret.properties.version}")
# Get secret
secret = client.get_secret("database-password")
print(f"Value: {secret.value}")
# Get specific version
secret = client.get_secret("database-password", version="abc123")
# List secrets (names only, not values)
for secret_properties in client.list_properties_of_secrets():
    print(f"Secret: {secret_properties.name}")
# List versions
for version in client.list_properties_of_secret_versions("database-password"):
    print(f"Version: {version.version}, Created: {version.created_on}")
# Delete secret (soft delete)
