# azure-identity-ts

A skill that walks the agent through Azure authentication with the @azure/identity library in TypeScript. Useful once DefaultAzureCredential or managed identity shows up in your code.

## What it does

The skill covers `@azure/identity`, the authentication library for Azure SDK clients using Microsoft Entra ID. It lays out the credential classes: DefaultAzureCredential for local development, managed identity for production, service principals with a secret or certificate, browser login and device code flow.

Environment variables get their own sections. A service principal needs `AZURE_TENANT_ID`, `AZURE_CLIENT_ID` and `AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET`, or a certificate path in `AZURE_CLIENT_CERTIFICATE_PATH`. Workload identity on Kubernetes uses `AZURE_FEDERATED_TOKEN_FILE`. When DefaultAzureCredential runs in production, set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` — without it the credential chain stays in development mode. Worth checking before you ship.

Developer credentials are documented too: Azure CLI, Azure Developer CLI, Azure PowerShell and Visual Studio Code, the last one requiring the `@azure/identity-vscode` package registered through `useIdentityPlugin`. For sovereign clouds you set `authorityHost` from `AzureAuthorityHosts`, either Azure Government or Azure China. There are examples of a custom `ChainedTokenCredential` and of turning a credential into a bearer token with `getBearerTokenProvider`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-identity-ts -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-identity-ts/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-identity-ts/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-identity-ts/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-identity-ts/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-identity-ts
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-identity-ts/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-identity-ts
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-identity-ts/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-identity-ts/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- wire up Azure SDK auth without hand-tracing the credential chain
- attach managed identity to an Azure client in production
- move service principal secrets into environment variables
- add browser or device code login for local debugging
- point authentication at Azure Government or Azure China

## Example prompts
- Set up Azure authentication for this project with `@azure/identity`
- Swap the service principal secret for managed identity in this client
- Add Azure CLI login for local development

# Azure Identity library for TypeScript

Authentication library for Azure SDK clients using Microsoft Entra ID.

## Installation

```bash
npm install @azure/identity
# For Visual Studio Code credential support
npm install @azure/identity-vscode
```

## Environment Variables

### Service Principal (Secret)

```bash
AZURE_TENANT_ID=<tenant-id>
AZURE_CLIENT_ID=<client-id>
AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET=<client-secret>
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

### Service Principal (Certificate)

```bash
AZURE_TENANT_ID=<tenant-id>
AZURE_CLIENT_ID=<client-id>
AZURE_CLIENT_CERTIFICATE_PATH=/path/to/cert.pem
AZURE_CLIENT_CERTIFICATE_PASSWORD=<optional-password>
```

### Workload Identity (Kubernetes)

```bash
AZURE_TENANT_ID=<tenant-id>
AZURE_CLIENT_ID=<client-id>
AZURE_FEDERATED_TOKEN_FILE=/var/run/secrets/tokens/azure-identity
```

## DefaultAzureCredential (Recommended for Local Development)

```typescript
import { DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential } from "@azure/identity";
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
const credential = new DefaultAzureCredential({requiredEnvVars: ["AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS"]});
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/javascript/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-node-latest#credential-classes
// const credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
// Use with any Azure SDK client
import { BlobServiceClient } from "@azure/storage-blob";
const blobClient = new BlobServiceClient(
  "https://<account>.blob.core.windows.net",
  credential
);
```

See [DefaultAzureCredential overview](https://aka.ms/azsdk/js/identity/credential-chains#defaultazurecredential-overview) for the current credential chain order and defaults.

## Managed Identity

### System-Assigned

```typescript
import { ManagedIdentityCredential } from "@azure/identity";
const credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
```

### User-Assigned (by Client ID)

```typescript
const credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential({
  clientId: "<user-assigned-client-id>"
});
```

### User-Assigned (by Resource ID)

```typescript
const credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential({
  resourceId: "/subscriptions/<sub>/resourceGroups/<rg>/providers/Microsoft.ManagedIdentity/userAssignedIdentities/<name>"
});
```
