## What it does

This skill covers Java authentication options for Azure, including `DefaultAzureCredential`, managed identity, service principals using a secret or certificate, Azure CLI login, and interactive sign-in. It shows how to pass credentials to Azure SDK clients such as `BlobServiceClient` and `KeyClient`.

The material includes a Maven dependency for `com.azure:azure-identity`, Java snippets, and an example of composing a custom credential chain. For local development, the Azure CLI option relies on signing in with `az login`; managed identity is presented for applications hosted in Azure. Certificate-based setup needs a PEM or PFX file path in the code, and PFX credentials also take a password.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-identity-java -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-identity-java/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-identity-java/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-identity-java/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-identity-java/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-identity-java
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-identity-java/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-identity-java
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-identity-java/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-identity-java/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- choose credentials for a Java application running on Azure
- connect authentication to an Azure SDK client
- configure a service principal with a secret or certificate
- compose a chain using managed identity and Azure CLI

## Example prompts
- Set up Azure authentication for my Java app with `DefaultAzureCredential`.
- Show how to use managed identity with `BlobServiceClient`.
- Write a Java example for a service principal using a PEM certificate.

# Azure Identity library for Java

Authentication library for Azure SDK clients using Microsoft Entra ID.

## Installation

```xml
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
    <artifactId>azure-identity</artifactId>
    <version>1.15.0</version>
</dependency>
```

## Key Concepts

| Credential | Use Case |
|------------|----------|
| `DefaultAzureCredential` | **Recommended** - Works in dev and production |
| `ManagedIdentityCredential` | Azure-hosted apps (App Service, Functions, VMs) |
| `EnvironmentCredential` | CI/CD pipelines with env vars |
| `ClientSecretCredential` | Service principals with secret |
| `ClientCertificateCredential` | Service principals with certificate |
| `AzureCliCredential` | Local dev using `az login` |
| `InteractiveBrowserCredential` | Interactive login flow |
| `DeviceCodeCredential` | Headless device authentication |

## DefaultAzureCredential (Recommended)

The `DefaultAzureCredential` tries multiple authentication methods in order. See [DefaultAzureCredential overview](https://aka.ms/azsdk/java/identity/credential-chains#defaultazurecredential-overview) for the current credential chain order and defaults.

```java
import com.azure.identity.DefaultAzureCredential;
import com.azure.identity.DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder;
// Simple usage
DefaultAzureCredential credential = new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder().build();
// Use with any Azure client
BlobServiceClient blobClient = new BlobServiceClientBuilder()
    .endpoint("https://<storage-account>.blob.core.windows.net")
    .credential(credential)
    .buildClient();
KeyClient keyClient = new KeyClientBuilder()
    .vaultUrl("https://<vault-name>.vault.azure.net")
    .credential(credential)
    .buildClient();
```

### Configure DefaultAzureCredential

```java
DefaultAzureCredential credential = new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder()
    .managedIdentityClientId("<user-assigned-identity-client-id>")  // For user-assigned MI
    .tenantId("<tenant-id>")                                        // Limit to specific tenant
    .excludeEnvironmentCredential()                                 // Skip env vars
    .excludeAzureCliCredential()                                    // Skip Azure CLI
    .build();
```

## Managed Identity

For Azure-hosted applications (App Service, Functions, AKS, VMs).

```java
import com.azure.identity.ManagedIdentityCredential;
import com.azure.identity.ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder;
// System-assigned managed identity
ManagedIdentityCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder()
    .build();
// User-assigned managed identity (by client ID)
ManagedIdentityCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder()
    .clientId("<user-assigned-client-id>")
    .build();
// User-assigned managed identity (by resource ID)
ManagedIdentityCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder()
    .resourceId("/subscriptions/<sub>/resourceGroups/<rg>/providers/Microsoft.ManagedIdentity/userAssignedIdentities/<name>")
    .build();
```

## Service Principal with Secret

```java
