## What it does

The skill covers the `azure-eventhub` Python SDK. It shows how to build an `EventHubProducerClient` and `EventHubConsumerClient`, add events to a batch while handling the size limit, target a partition by `partition_id` or by partition key, and update a checkpoint after each event on the receive side. Both sync and async clients get their own sections.

Checkpointing needs the `azure-eventhub-checkpointstoreblob-aio` package plus a blob container: `BlobCheckpointStore` takes the account URL and container name. Auth runs through `DefaultAzureCredential`, which picks up Azure CLI or VS Code locally and managed identity in Azure. The skill tells you to skip connection strings and keys because they bypass Entra audit and rotation. In production you narrow the credential chain with `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod`.

Set `EVENT_HUB_FULLY_QUALIFIED_NAMESPACE` and `EVENT_HUB_NAME` before anything runs; checkpointing adds `STORAGE_ACCOUNT_URL` and `CHECKPOINT_CONTAINER`. Every client goes inside a context manager, otherwise sockets and the token cache are not released deterministically. That last rule is easy to drop when you copy a snippet, and the skill flags it for a reason.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-eventhub-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-eventhub-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-eventhub-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-eventhub-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-eventhub-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-eventhub-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-eventhub-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-eventhub-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-eventhub-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-eventhub-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- send a stream of events to an Event Hub in batches
- read events from a partition without losing position
- set up blob-based checkpointing for a consumer
- port a producer to the async client
- swap a connection string for DefaultAzureCredential

## Example prompts
- write an azure-eventhub producer that sends a batch of events to my-eventhub
- add a consumer with checkpointing through BlobCheckpointStore
- convert my event sending to the async EventHubProducerClient

# Azure Event Hubs SDK for Python

Big data streaming platform for high-throughput event ingestion.

## Installation

```bash
pip install azure-eventhub azure-identity
# For checkpointing with blob storage
pip install azure-eventhub-checkpointstoreblob-aio
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
EVENT_HUB_FULLY_QUALIFIED_NAMESPACE=<namespace>.servicebus.windows.net  # Required for all auth methods
EVENT_HUB_NAME=my-eventhub  # Required for all auth methods
STORAGE_ACCOUNT_URL=https://<account>.blob.core.windows.net  # Required for checkpoint storage
CHECKPOINT_CONTAINER=checkpoints  # Required for checkpoint storage
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

```python
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential
from azure.eventhub import EventHubProducerClient, EventHubConsumerClient
# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()
namespace = "<namespace>.servicebus.windows.net"
eventhub_name = "my-eventhub"
# Producer
with EventHubProducerClient(
    fully_qualified_namespace=namespace,
    eventhub_name=eventhub_name,
    credential=credential
) as producer:
    # Use producer here (see following sections for operations)
    ...
# Consumer
