## What it does

The skill covers writing streaming applications with the Azure Event Hubs SDK for Java. It ships ready code patterns: `EventHubProducerClient` and `EventHubConsumerClient`, async variants, sending a single event or a batch, targeting a specific partition or a partition key, and attaching properties to events.

For production there is `EventProcessorClient` with a Blob Storage checkpoint store, which needs `com.azure:azure-messaging-eventhubs` and `com.azure:azure-messaging-eventhubs-checkpointstore-blob`. Auth is either a connection string or `DefaultAzureCredential`; the skill advises `DefaultAzureCredential` for local dev and `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS` or a specific credential such as `ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder` in production.

No connection string and no configured credential means the client never builds, so check that first. The skill installs into Claude and GitHub Copilot.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-eventhub-java -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-eventhub-java/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-eventhub-java/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-eventhub-java/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-eventhub-java/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-eventhub-java
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-eventhub-java/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-eventhub-java
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-eventhub-java/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-eventhub-java/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stand up an Event Hubs producer in Java
- send events in batches and handle a full batch
- read events from one partition at a chosen position
- wire EventProcessorClient to a Blob Storage checkpoint store
- pick between a connection string and DefaultAzureCredential

## Example prompts
- Create an EventHubProducerClient from a connection string and send a batch of events
- Set up EventProcessorClient with BlobCheckpointStore and checkpoint after processing
- Show how to send an event to partition 0 using CreateBatchOptions

# Azure Event Hubs SDK for Java

Build real-time streaming applications using the Azure Event Hubs SDK for Java.

## Installation

```xml
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
    <artifactId>azure-messaging-eventhubs</artifactId>
    <version>5.19.0</version>
</dependency>
<!-- For checkpoint store (production) -->
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
    <artifactId>azure-messaging-eventhubs-checkpointstore-blob</artifactId>
    <version>1.20.0</version>
</dependency>
```

## Client Creation

### EventHubProducerClient

```java
import com.azure.messaging.eventhubs.EventHubProducerClient;
import com.azure.messaging.eventhubs.EventHubClientBuilder;
// With connection string
EventHubProducerClient producer = new EventHubClientBuilder()
    .connectionString("<connection-string>", "<event-hub-name>")
    .buildProducerClient();
// Full connection string with EntityPath
EventHubProducerClient producer = new EventHubClientBuilder()
    .connectionString("<connection-string-with-entity-path>")
    .buildProducerClient();
```

### With DefaultAzureCredential

```java
import com.azure.core.credential.TokenCredential;
import com.azure.identity.AzureIdentityEnvVars;
import com.azure.identity.DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.identity.ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
TokenCredential credential = new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder()
    .requireEnvVars(AzureIdentityEnvVars.AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS)
    .build();
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/java/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-java-stable#credential-classes
// TokenCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder().build();
EventHubProducerClient producer = new EventHubClientBuilder()
    .fullyQualifiedNamespace("<namespace>.servicebus.windows.net")
    .eventHubName("<event-hub-name>")
    .credential(credential)
    .buildProducerClient();
```

### EventHubConsumerClient

```java
import com.azure.messaging.eventhubs.EventHubConsumerClient;
EventHubConsumerClient consumer = new EventHubClientBuilder()
    .connectionString("<connection-string>", "<event-hub-name>")
    .consumerGroup(EventHubClientBuilder.DEFAULT_CONSUMER_GROUP_NAME)
    .buildConsumerClient();
```

### Async Clients

```java
import com.azure.messaging.eventhubs.EventHubProducerAsyncClient;
import com.azure.messaging.eventhubs.EventHubConsumerAsyncClient;
EventHubProducerAsyncClient asyncProducer = new EventHubClientBuilder()
    .connectionString("<connection-string>", "<event-hub-name>")
    .buildAsyncProducerClient();
EventHubConsumerAsyncClient asyncConsumer = new EventHubClientBuilder()
