## What it does

This skill guides the agent in writing Python code with `azure-eventgrid` and `azure-identity`. It covers sync and async publishing using `EventGridPublisherClient` alongside `azure.eventgrid.aio`. You get standard patterns for single events and batch payloads.

Security defaults are strictly enforced. The skill avoids API keys or raw connection strings, requiring `DefaultAzureCredential` instead. Every client instance is wrapped in a `with` or `async with` block. Omitting context managers leaks sockets, HTTP transports, and token caches.

To run the generated code, install `azure-eventgrid` and `azure-identity` via pip. You also need `EVENTGRID_TOPIC_ENDPOINT` or `EVENTGRID_NAMESPACE_ENDPOINT` set in your environment. Production setups can restrict credentials using `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-eventgrid-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-eventgrid-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-eventgrid-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-eventgrid-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-eventgrid-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-eventgrid-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-eventgrid-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-eventgrid-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-eventgrid-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-eventgrid-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- publish batches of CloudEvents 1.0 to an Event Grid topic
- implement async event publishing with `azure.eventgrid.aio`
- switch client authentication from keys to `DefaultAzureCredential`
- route events to namespace topics for pull delivery

## Example prompts
- Write an async Python function to publish a CloudEvent batch to Azure Event Grid
- Send an EventGridEvent with order details and subject using DefaultAzureCredential
- Create a publisher client for an Event Grid namespace topic in Python

# Azure Event Grid SDK for Python

Event routing service for building event-driven applications with pub/sub semantics.

## Installation

```bash
pip install azure-eventgrid azure-identity
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
EVENTGRID_TOPIC_ENDPOINT=https://<topic-name>.<region>.eventgrid.azure.net/api/events  # Required for Event Grid topic publishing
EVENTGRID_NAMESPACE_ENDPOINT=https://<namespace>.<region>.eventgrid.azure.net  # Required for namespace operations
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

```python
import os
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential
from azure.eventgrid import EventGridPublisherClient
# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()
endpoint = "https://<topic-name>.<region>.eventgrid.azure.net/api/events"
with EventGridPublisherClient(endpoint, credential) as client:
    # Use client here (see following sections for operations)
    ...
```

## Event Types

| Format | Class | Use Case |
|--------|-------|----------|
| Cloud Events 1.0 | `CloudEvent` | Standard, interoperable (recommended) |
| Event Grid Schema | `EventGridEvent` | Azure-native format |

## Publish CloudEvents

```python
from azure.eventgrid import EventGridPublisherClient, CloudEvent
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential
with EventGridPublisherClient(endpoint, DefaultAzureCredential()) as client:
    # Single event
    event = CloudEvent(
        type="MyApp.Events.OrderCreated",
        source="/myapp/orders",
        data={"order_id": "12345", "amount": 99.99}
